Post subject:  Paint matching
Hello everyone,

Just asking for peoples' input on colour matching. I now have a sample of my paint (not deliberately) and I was going to take it to Allards (the recommended place in Canberra) to be matched. Can anybody give me an idea on the costs?

I had an interesting day today, running my Mini up Black Mountain to see how well it ran with the Dell'orto. By all accounts, very well. Especially the bit when the car did a 180 and I fell off the road backwards and did extensive damage to the rear drivers side. I was lucky enough to find that underneath the paint was at least 2mm of fibre glass holding the rust together. The rear valance panel is completely rusted out, and I now have a hole in the boot because the metal was so rusted out. Well, in that case, more bog should fix it, don't you think?

Interesting response from my parents - my mother was purely concerned with my well-being, and all my father had to say was 'you simply can't afford to have accidents with your pissy job!' He is helping me respray it this weekend - he is a master with a spray gun, on scale models, but hasn't done a car yet!

Funny with the differing parental aspects huh :)

I know its just rubbernecking but u got any pics of it now?

Strangely enough I do have a pic. Yes it is ol' bluey in the pic. Now it is bluey and primer greyey too! Should have it fixed over the weekend, or at least the fibre glassing done. Please, nobody flame me for bogging the car, it already has a protective coating of bog across the entire car from the previous owner :D

Oh yeah, magnify the damage on the rear corner by about ten, and imagine the back wheel is hard up against the door. That's what I did to my old car, when I went sliding off the road backwards into a tree :-( 150 bucks for an entire new quarter, and a new diff, and she was good to go :-)

I made a good Fiat 124AC Sports coupe out of two bent ones some years ago. The painter named the LF guard `a sculpure in bog'!!
Hey the Medium Blue metallic paint stayed on and looked a foot deep, so what the hell.. :lol:

ive been told its darn hard to match existing flat paint
its even harder getting metallic paint
youve got to take into account fading in metallic paint its more prominent in that type

They can match nearly any paint now with a little bit of time, even taking into consideration deterioration. The problem occurs with metallic paint.

Metallic paint requires that the whole panel be repainted. Pain in the arse for a few stone chips. With all the technology these days, ya never know. They may be able to spray something on it, that straightens the panels, and removes the rust in one hit.

Well I've resprayed minor parts of the car before using Super Cheap paint at $7.95 and that worked quite well! This time I'll get the paint matched (I have a fair few 'examples' of the paint colour that fell off :) ). The damage isn't in a prominent location so even if the paint match isn't perfect it shouldn't be too noticeable, with the chrome bumper and tail light helping to cover it up. Maybe Cooper S corner bars will help too.

Its funny how parental commitement differs between families. My dear old father is a mechanical engineer and used to manage a huge truck repair shop and a car parts factory like a decade ago and know a ridicuolus ammount of stuff about cars. When I bought the mini I was hopping for a "father son" project where we get to know each other and tv music is playing, coz I didnt grow up with him. Hes been raping me to get rid of the car get rid of the stuff out of the garage and not to ask him for help and not to borrow his car when the mini doesnt really feel like driving since the first day I got it.
And his girlfriend is even better I mean borrowing the garage for 2 days becomes a reason for threatening divorce (not that they're married yet).

For everybodies information, I visited Allards today and was quoted $30 for matched paint (for a couple of 100mls, enough to respray the damage). I just have to leave a flare with them for a few days for matching purposes. I might get some extra paint coz I have two flares to respray aswell. The front one is up for respraying, again.

I reckon the main problem with the spraying will not so much be the paint colour, but matching the finish. My whole car is orange peeled by the guy who painted it. My old man is a good sprayer and I doubt it will orange peel, it will be a nice smooth finish.
