Post subject:  Oil Consumption

There have been threads about fuel consumption....and who can blame us with current prices.

Motor Oil costs in excess of $4 / litre (depending on brand)

How much does your motor use?

None of my minis use any oil.

Changed every 3000 miles or 6 months

5 litres in and 5 litres out.

All motors use oil, its the nature of the internal combustion engine, if it doesnt use a little it is not working correctly, some use more than others but as long as thre is no big cloud following you its all good

I don't think so.... If an engine is built correctly it should use no oil. Rings and Seals stop oil getting into the bore and being burnt. YES, all engines will use oil as no motor is perfect, BUT Steve's motor's are as near as Damn it. If he says 5 in 5 out. i believe him.
My New car uses no oil, never have to top it up and you change oil every 10,000k's in them.....

Cheers

My mazda uses no oil between the 10,000kms services, neither did a vtec honda I owned. However my previous VT2 commodore on the other hand used to use 0.5L every 10,000 - but as anybody who has owned a dodgy GENIII motor and that has battled holden to replace it under warranty will tell you, that is acceptably within holden's specifications (which I believe is 1L every 1000kms). :?

When ford first went to the pursuit 170 motor in the XP falcons they engineered it so that the motors used no oil (under normal circumstances. )

As a result, many of those motors needed rebores and new pistons at a fairly young age.

I also believe that a healthy motor uses oil - its how a motor is designed to function. Its a case of is it millilitres or litres thats importment..

Anton, if you had fitted NEW rings to those 1098 pistons when you rebored it, its oil consumption would be negligible.
Barney (1293) uses next to none, as does Daytona 1132) when it was on the road.
Ha-ha (1360) gets through about 300ml in between changes (1500 miles)

Well here is a lesson in automotive engineering (I am one) All motors use oil, no ring or seal is perfect especialy working in the environment of an engine, the oil you remove after running an engine for a time is contaminated with fuel, water and whatever else like carbon, fine metal particles(more so in a mini engine) so while you might be able to remove the same amount of fluid it is not all oil. On a really good condition motor the oil usage is small the small amount of contamination appears to keep the oil level the same. As the engine wears the amount burnt exceeds the amount of contamination, so the level of oil falls. When you start your engine cold with choke extra fuel is placed in the cylinder and a certain amount washes down the bore into the sump ( same thing happens if you run the car to rich all the time washing the film of oil left in the bore causing excessive wear) some of the oil in the bore is burnt of during combustion its a fact of life with engines, short trips are worse because the engine will not rise to a temp that allows the fuel and water to evaporate off, thats one of the reasons a taxi can do 500000 klms, they don't get cool that often and are usually driven or running most of the time at the desired running temp and this keeps the oil in better condition.

If you are only doing short trips all the time 20ks or so the engine will be lucky to reach a true operating temp to remove these contaminates and because you are doing more cold starts the effect is worse for the engine, thats why most manufatcures have different service intervals for cars in the city compared to cars driven higher milage say in the country.

I hope this helps you understand the statement that all cars use oil, take the car out for a good long drive every couple of weeks, its good for the car and helps keep the oil in good condition
