Post subject: | moke work |
finally got the moke over at a friends place for work 1. monday cut out n mig weld over holes i made 2. tuesday cut other side and mig weld 3. mig welded underside and sealed with "auto works sealant" - very sticky flexible sealant that can be used on metal 4. thursday engine out and taken all apart thats where some questions come up: 1. i asked the guy (whos been playing with engines since he was 14, now he's 50, he has a custom Morris 110 converted in Vietnam) if i could prime the surface with KillRust Red Oxide Zinc Chromate for chemical and physical protection he said no, the sealant would be better. primers kinda crap/thin 2. he advised to heat sheets of tar onto inside body. this comes in sheets and you heat gun it until it adhears to the body. it dries hard are 1 and 2 adequate ways of rust prevention? (i dont mind looks/originality, thats for my matic. moke is for me to muck around with) 3. engine apart discovered good gearbox, good pistons and conrods. only thing wrong were copper bearings around conrods and crankshaft bearings. crankshaft needs polish and new bearing fitted im thinking of a place on Hume Highway that has a massive crankshaft out in the front 4. how do you know if it takes leaded/unleaded? the guy said the exhaust was one tube with one muffler it can take unleaded only. if it has one tube and two mufflers then it takes leaded. any other way to tell? 5. also what colour should i paint it. still have a while to paint, i like black. goes well with my bike helmet cheers |

I would advise against using Zinc Chromate Primer. While it's great for corrosion protection, it doesnt bond to metal very well at all. That's its major downfall. The other problem with Zinc Chromate is that it's DAMN bad for yer health. We've been banned from spraying it at work, and only allowed to brush it on while wearing a respirator etc. |
