Post subject: | Oil exit bolt from engine to filter |
Is there a special way to do up the exit bolt from engine to the metal hose that runs to the oil filter on early engines? the bolt is simular to a brake bleed valve in that it has a hollow core running lengthways and then near the head of the bolt there is another hollow running horizontal, to allow flow from engine into the oil hose. I assume that this hole MUST line up with the oil hose, and therefore the bolt must be done up square. However my bolt is Fing difficult to tighten, it is a little less than a quarter of a turn from squaring this horizontal hollow with the oil filter pipe. Do i just need to apply force, or will this strip the thread??, do i need to line up the bolt in a different way so when tightened to a reasonable degree it will just square up?? I dont actually have a socket to fit it, so im using an adjustable spanner, which really sucks for the job Thanks sorry if its a little difficult to understand. |

Loosen or take off the other end of the oil pipe on the filter. That'll allow you to line up the top bolt and start the thread easily. It doesnt matter which way the hole faces. The oil will flow around the union. Should have plenty of thread really ?? Make sure you've got the two brass washers either side of the union. Once you've got the top thread in a couple of turns then refit the bottom joint. |

Yes its one of those jobs where both ends of the pipe must be loose to be able to tighten the pipe to a good seal. Tighten each end a little bit at a time - dont use big force - its an olive union at the oil filter end and brass washers at the block end. Just tighten till it seals, no more |

Yes you are right. No olives - may haziness in describing the union. It is flared over the joint. An olive is a ball like affair in the middle of the joint. |

One other trick ( or trap! ) the flared union on the filter end screws onto a nipple in the filter housing. Hold that one with an open ender while you undo it and also tighten it cos it can overtighten into the housing and split it. Know cos I've dun it !! |

i didnt have any difficutly doing up the bolt, its just that i thought the horizontal hollow needed to line up with the oil filter pipe. From what you are all say, this is not a problem?? I tried undoing the 'olive' down at the oil filter and nearly twisted the pipe off originally! so i left it |

No problem, the middle of that banjo bolt has a cavity all around it for the oil to flow. ![]() |
