when i start the car, the revs quickly climb to what sounds like 3 - 4k (with some missing), then the car stalls. the carb was set up as 'fast idle' and i think i have lowered it since then. What is the likely cause of this? I want to get the car running slightly smoothley so i can get around the front and fine tune it. Thanks :) |

does your choke go in any further? |

in any further as in more fuel, or less?? These starts i am talking about were with a little bit of choke on,but not much (ie, fuel mixture should still not be THAT rich). PS this is my first attempt to tune this engine, as i have only just stuck it in 1100 1.5 SU |

this appears to have been sorted now, not sure exactly what steps it took, but one of them was to increase the idle adjustment. Not sure why it was revving its arse off to begin with though. What does it mean when fire comes out of the manifold breather (the one for break booster??) igniting too early?? |

Backfore from carb end = Extremely rich Backfire from exhaust = lean |

Thanks, in this same predicament however, i open the throttle to full or whatever, and no change at all, it r uns a little less smooth, but no increase in speed, doesnt that indicate too lean?? or perhaps just a timing problem and yes, the sparkplugs are extremely black. :) |

Do you have either of Vizard's mini books. In it he gives a very comprehensive step by step on how to set up an su from scratch so that it will run. I think, from memory, he says t take the bell off and remove the piston. Wind up the nut underneath until the jet is flush with outer ring that supports it. Wind down the nut (either 1 1/2 times or 2 1/2 times) I cant remember which and my mini books are in our storage container. We are building a new house so cleaning out this one. Anyway - reassemble the carby and try it. Its somewhere to start from. When you reassemble - make sure the carby pistonm rises and falls smoothly after the screws are tightened and before you start the motor. Also check that the timing is about 5 degrees before top dead centre. |

You have a manifold leak. You MUST plug the hole that you can see the flames coming from!!! This is letting air into your mixture, and therefore doing funny things to it. This is also why it is backfiring through the carby. Plug this hole and see how much difference it makes |
