I know, I know it has all been covered before (well not all really) but just wondering how the termo work by themselves - ie the later injected British cars that had only the thermo fan installed - can the electric only setup handle the Aussie heat and is there a downside to running thermo only?

Cmoooon people, since when has no one has anything to say- do you know of any reports from the UK as to the effectiveness of the MPI thermo fan only setups on high tune engines?

basicly you have a thermostate that tells the fan when to cut in ...

I think I remember a post about someone that used a thermo fan and was able to get rid of the old fan. Sorry can't remember who it was though

Try the thermo fan without the mini fan and if it runs OK leave it otherwise stick the mini fan back on I reckon.

It helps in traffic, but it won't cure a shitty cooling system with a crappy pump, dirty system or gummed up radiator.

Works tops in mine, but I've got all my ducks in a row with the rest of the cooling system.

Yes thats the bottom line. Have a fully functioning cooling system, High capacity water pumps are not big money, a radiator top and bottom tank remove - a rod clean and reassembly is less than $100 anywhere.

Not a lot of water in a mini cooling system so what is there needs to be circulated and spend time transfering heat in the radiator. A thermo fan is great but not a cure for a faulty system.

Heaps less noise at speed though, those fans are as noisy as the RC40 exhaust on my S. May liberate a pony or two perhaps as the engine isn't trying to push that rotten fan at high revs just when you need it the least.

a cooling system with no problems should be able to run only a thermo fan, my mate did it on his 998 and it was great.
but, it was only a 998 not a stonking 1330 or sommit.

Not had any trouble with mine ('98 RMC) second summer since imported. Changed the coolant as part of a service after being unused for some months. Could'nt believ the crap that came out. Ran the motor and flushed it four times before the water ran clear.
Some troubles are caused by the connection to the fan, runs continually caused by too short a wire to the sensor switch. If you are installing yourself should'nt be a problem, just stingy manufacturer.

I am reading, and now i am smiling with glee, as it is FIXED. All i did was put the Alfa fan back on the Alfa radiator, and Viola, it works.

I can sit in traffic for 10 or 15 mins now, no problems. Sits on about 165-170* on a hot (i mean mid to high 30s) day. Oh, and thisis a stonking 1293.

Alfa rad, Alfa fan. Who would've thunk it, eh?
