Post subject:  Door hinge studs, washers and spacers.

When I removed my door hinges there were no little curved spacer washers to stop any warping of the panels.

A few questions:
1) Is there one for each stud and if not which ones have them?
2) Can you get away without them?
3) Can I replace the studs and nuts with a bolt?

Thank you!

1. They are used on the top hinge studs only.
2. It will tend to distort the A panel, and the door skin at back of hinge.
3. Yes, but watch you don't strip the hinge when fitting the bolts- they can easily go in crooked and tear the threads out. Note the hinges are cast iron...!

They were factory fitted to ALL our Minis. Look in bottom of doors, that's where they finish up!!
They are like a thick washer with one side cut at an angle.

<edit> Most important spot to have one is at back of top hinge, on door skin. Nice to have the others, too.

So you need a total of 8 for both top hinges, door and A panel (just to clarify)?
Can you buy them because I lost 7!!! and dont want to go salvaging of other cars.

Making studs
I have been told by the screw shop (LOL) that you can't buy studs in in that size. He said make them out of a bolt with the top cut away. To de-bur you just thread a nut on from the other end.

Is it that easy?
What do you cut with, angle grinder/hacksaw?

Can you buy studs as well as the washers?

questions questions questions

So you need a total of 8 for both top hinges, door and A panel (just to clarify)? Ummmm, you need 4 for each hinge (4 hinges)....don't forget they are handed...top right, top left etc

Can you buy them because I lost 7!!! and dont want to go salvaging of other cars....why not :?: everybody else does :!: You may have some success extracting them by dosing with WD-40 multiple time then running two nuts down the stud and lining up their flats so they lock...then try undoing the stud using the nut colosest to the hinge...

Making studs
I have been told by the screw shop (LOL) that you can't buy studs in in that size. He said make them out of a bolt with the top cut away. To de-bur you just thread a nut on from the other end.

Is it that easy? Yes

What do you cut with, angle grinder/hacksaw? YES then just put a neat taper about 45 degrees on the end you have cut so that it looks like the other end and so the thread strarts easily into a nut (don't make the taper too humongous)

Can you buy studs as well as the washers? YES...somewhere will have them :D

questions questions questions...always with the questions :!:

Dr Mini, has mentioned that the special washers are only found on the top hinges = 8

Will begin my search for these buggers NOW!

Bye.

Andy....ask Tim (or someone) if he they have some as samples....then just measure the sample up and make some yourself out of brass or aluminium (eeeewwwhhh dissimilar metals  ) round stock or thick wall tube if ya can find it... :D

BTW I would be interested in peoples opinions about ditching the studs and using bolts anyway....

The bolts or studs are 1/4" UNF thread, if anybody is wondering..
Often you find bolts have been used, instead of studs... no problem as long as they are the right length and go in straight.
