Post subject:  Is the 1275LS worth preserving?
Hi
I have a 1275 LS which has rust I could not even think about having fixed. Every panel is rusted. Even if I tried to have it fixed I suspect new rust would appear in new places even befor the primer was dry.
I have a 75 Clubman which could use the motor and various good bits that come with the 1275 LS. (nice alloys, disc brakes, LS dash etc)
Some folks here have very definate ideas about the various models but you don't hear much regarding the 1275 LS.
Would it be better to look for another 1275 with less body work required and maybe no motor and try to keep at least 1 more 1275 alive, or is this model not worth the effort?

Personlly I think every Mini is worth preserving :).

But I guess it depends on how much money you want to spend and if you can do some if not all of the work yourself as most panels can still be brought.

But having said that I guess it really depends on where the rust is and how bad it is. Perhaps if you was able to take some photos and post them up on the forum that would give people a better indication as to how far it has gone and if it can be fixed properly.

Anyway thats my thoughts :).

mate i love clubbies. and IMO the most collectable of all clubies are
GTs and 1275LS..... so i personally would try to save it. that is just my opion.

looks like you have some other minis to keep you going. just go slow and do
it over time. it is worth saving IMO

Ahhhh-To perserve or not to perserve...That is the question :cry: :cry:
Maybe advertise it as "rare or "very rare" or "extremely rare" and use the dollars you will get for it on a another Mini project :idea: :idea:

I really don't want to let go of this motor.
1310 reco engine and box, twin SUs goes really well, would seem a little silly to let go of it. I have a 75 clubbie with a smokey motor and a Mini K which should be on the road by Christmas and it already has a clubbie motor so I would think it could take the 1275 fairly readily, and yes the K has Cooper S discs before anyone jumps up and down about sticking that motor in a car with drum brakes.

This is not related but anyway:
I just thought of a really good idea/scam.. I couldn't carry it out on mini's, it would be wrong. But what I'll do is buy an old VW beatle (as an example) thats been done up perfectly original and store it away. Then drive around and smash every beatle I find.. till mines the only one left.. Think how much it would be worth!! I'd be rich! What a plan!

its worth saving i think. the panels can be replaced, basically everything can. is the chassis rusted though?

thats a very nice motor you ahve in there, i reckon try to get another mini back on the road, its always good to see when you're out and about.

I hope so, I purchased a Hi Ho Silver LS for the future as I think they could be the next Cooper S.
Get rid of your 75 clubman and purchase a good 78 body to re shell, if the rust is that bad.

Just loosen the fuel line, most of them catch fire anyway. Don't pick the VW, I think they are still making them in Mexico.

With only 1000 of them being built, 500 in gold 500 in silver, i belive they are worth restoring, i have a mate who's restoring a nugget gold version, he has replaced the whole front,roof,sills,boot floor in the effort to bring it back to its 100% original state, when he finishes the gold one, he's moving onto the hi ho silver one, again to restore it to 100% original. Make no mistake 1275LS's will one day pull big money.

Absolutely the 1275LS is worth preserving.

I also have 2 minis, one '75 Granny-banger to get me to work, and one 90% original 1275LS, in silver.

As i think it is the nicest mini- non Cooper S you could buy, 1275/discs and all, but without the price tag. I have spent some big bucks on rebuilding the motor (using the same block- they were different) to half-race sorta specs, 70s look Hotwire rims, i am using a front-mount radiator, and i have put all the usual CD player, amp, sub, etc. into it...

But i haven't had to cut anything, not hacked up the trim nor dashboard, etc. I really do believe these cars are worth it. Not many left these days. Do what you can (bieng realistic with money) to keep it. :wink:

I will see if I can get my friendly panel beater to drive by and give me an idea of the cost of the rust repairs. I would expect somewhere around 3-4k and then painting on top. It is currently red but is actually the silver version.
2 colours I really hate in cars, silver and gold. Both make the car turn invisible in anything less than ideal visibilty. Around dusk they just blend into the background, ideal cammo, not exactly what you want in a mini. However if it goes ahead I would probably have it signwritten with the business name so anything could go over the silver.
