Post subject:  TOTAL NOOB: backyard paint jobs
Hi I am a total noob to all things paint in regards to minis... in the mini community in aus are there many people around that do backyard paint jobs etc? is it worth it? what are the costings like for things like metallic paint and the overall job.. how does one even learn to do backyard paint jobs etc? im really keen to get my panel van done in the deep metallic purple you see on the new ford falcons around but have no idea on cost good places to source paint/know how etc? how much would a paint job cost either backyard vs paint shop?

Depends on what paint you use 2pac or Acrylic

Depends on the brand of paints as to the cost..

And the end product depends on the Prep time you put in... Painting is not hard.. its all about getting the surface right first.

I am no painter.. but I can do it... Whats the worst thing that will happen.. it looks crap and you get to strip the panel back? Give it a go..

Look around the net on painting advice.. there are a few good sites and Books and DVDs..

Never know is ya dont give it a go.. :lol:

I might be wrong but AFAIK metalic paints need to be 2 pac paints these paints have some pretty nasty chemicals and stuff in then which means that you really need to paint in a spray booth. You also don't have the same opportunity to cut back and respray that you do with acrylic. Both of these points mean that you really want 2 pac to be sparyed by a professional IMO. Metalic paint is more difficult again so that doesn't help.

This is not to say that you cannot do some / all of the preperation yourself and then get the pros to spray it for you. You should ask the panel beater etcyou choose what they prefer but a lot will let you strip it back to bare metal (if this is what you want to do) as this is the manual work that they don't really like and then they do the prep and panel beating from the bare metal on.

Backyard paint jobs are usually someone you know offering their sevices,
so no price is garanteed. The might do it for cost of materials plus all the grog they can drink whilst doing it. Paint shop is prep dependent. More you do, less for them and the cheaper it can get. You'd be looking at 4-5 grand.
Remember, you get what you pay for.

Paint (on average) is worth about $150 - $220 per 4L, depending on brand.

4L will do a Mini no worries. I actually use more on my paint jobs, but 4L will suffice.

Primer and fillers etc will add to the cost. Allow $400 ish for all your paint and thinners etc.

A decent spray gun will be around $100

A decent compressor will cost from $200 (2.5HP - 40L). My inlaws compressor cost $1100 :shock:

Preparation is 90% of a great job....so MANY hours should be spent on sanding, stripping and filling. Someone who knows what they are doing should check your surfaces before colour goes on. Gloss highlights ALL imperfections, so get it right the first time.

If you want a decent job and you are a newbie to all this, pay someone to do it! Otherwise you will get --> :x >-- every time you look at your car.

OK, I thought they were :oops: I guess the Hi Ho silver and gold of the LS 1275s is considered metalic and that would be acrylic :?: :? so I guess your right JAM :oops:

I'd still get it spayed by a pro but do the prep myself :wink: find a panel beater / painter you trust and talk to them and explain what your after, your budget, how much you are prepared to do yourself etc and see what they say.

its not recommended that you spray 2 pak i a booth, its a necessity, and also you dont have to worry about wind and bugs n stuff, and the sun wont dry out a place in the car more than another.

i have the paint you want did you know that it is a translucent paint so you have to paint a solid colour underit first ... black in this case i'm also thinking of selling it cost me 350 would take a reasonable offer on it

mate if it is a flat colour (not mettalic) give it a go at home...

if it is metallic then take it to a pro.. they show up all the imperfections
ion your prep work.........and require more skill when spraying on the paint
