Ok, I've got over 1/2 a tank of 92 octane that is absolutely useless on my engine.... (Look, i needed to fill, and there was NO BP Ultimate on the coast....not even any 95 octane!!) About 14 litres in the tank.... I NEED to bring the octane of this shite up about 4-5 points..... Guessing about 3/4 Litre of Tolulene ? (GP Paint Thinners) would be about right ? guessing its also a little illegal ...... ![]() Any other suggestions ? J |

I use the 10% rule of thumb, but have known jap turbo guys to use up to 25% ![]() |

Does it *have* to be BP Ultimate? I have had no trouble getting Shell Optimax or Caltex Vortex 98 on the coast - the shortage only seems to be affecting BP on the central coast. Hope that helps ![]() |

there is a formula to use and its something like this to tell you how many octane points you can lift it. (92 octane X 14 litres) +(toluene 114octane X 11 litres (whats left in your tank) divided by 25(tank size. 1288 + 1254 = 2542/25 = 101.6 octane (gees thats av gas) but you can work it out. Now tell me where you get the thinners form as i have been hunting for it everywhere here, I know i can get av gas but i now want to play a bit. |

Thanks Poki.. yea, I've tried Optimax, and it just coats my plugs with Manganese (Guessing thats what it is.. that or Iron Oxide !) If i cant get 98 next fill, I'll go for some Vortex.. used it before and it was pretty good...... its just that the BP is close to Home !! Thanks Jai, the Thinners I have is the Super-cheap auto brand, but as far as i know any GP thinners Should do the trick..... J |

GP thinners is not all toluene, it's only ~75% v/v hydrocarbons I think.. any chemists here know if the rest is likely to damage anything? I have some GP thinners too, now surplus to my painting requirements... ![]() while we're at it, can we use acrylic thinners- (got that too, haha) ![]() |

Can't remember what is in the acrylic thinners, but seem to remember they contain compounds that may cause oxidation and react with some alloys (e.g. carbies). |

You can buy pure toluene from lab supplies e.g. http://www.chemsupply.com.au/products.php?keywords=TOLUENE&property=f2&search_type=all Oxygenated compounds will increase the power of the fuels (e.g. MEK) but they are bad for your carbies. The FAI have limits on the oxygenation levels of fuels as well as the octane number. From my hazy memory, the remaining 25% in GTA thinners is 15% acetone and 10% methylethylketone. Is fine, burns clean ![]() |

saying that i wonder how this stuff would run with some NOS connecte to it if its an oxygen issue? mmmmmmmmm the tip of an iceberg i may say. |

I ran some of that stuff (NOS in black bottle) at Wakefield Pk last year - I was less than impressed. Car ran better when I topped the tank back up with BP 98. ![]() |

You can get toluene in large quantities here in NZ, but good luck them letting you buy it - they will want a good reason and "homemade octane booster" probably isnt one. The reason for this is they use toluene for making P, so apparently they have cracked down on how hard it is to get in large quantities (well, in NZ anyway) |

Be careful with too much. I had the diaphram in my brand new electric SU pump go west during the last Sydney "thinners in the servo petrol" scandle. SU refused to replace it under warranty. I guess it was hard to identify exactly what crap was poured down the storage tanks. I stick to brand name only now. |
