Post subject:  my new motor in bits - the rebuild has begun

Baracade pulled this 1275 out to put the starlet motor in because there was no drive to/through the gearbox. 8)

i bought the motor off Minimad who bought it from Baracade. They wanted to know what the problem was. As far as i can tell the only major problem that would have caused this was the very oily clutch, damn thing must have been slipping like crazy. when i turn the input shaft (and i did this with the primary gear too) the diff rotates cleanly, but there is an odd clinking sound that could be a bearing. No metal gremlins in the bottom of it. All the gears are there, no broken teeth, no broken diff pins as far as i can tell - so there ya go. any other guesses?

what is worse though is that the timing gear was changed to a brand new double row to cure a rattle. i suspect the real cause of the rattle was the destroyed centre main bearing. one of the bolts was very tight in the thread, it may be crossed. anyway it looks like the torque wrench went click prematurely because the bolt was so tight in the thread. this means not enough clamping on the cap and the bearing has spun to the point that one half is split in two along the oil groove. i am assuming this was done in a rebuild before Baracade even got the car, because anyone who kept forcing a bolt like that is dodgy as hell IMHO.

i have to take the crank and block to someone who can tell me if it is salvagable. at least the crank does not sound cracked to me- nice ringing, but the centre bearing journal may be stuffed.

hey mick i know what ya mean i pulled the 1360 appart today cos i was sceptical asto the condition of it any way pulled the centre main and it has some slight scoring and thought bugger it so pulled the other two rear main was the worst so i pulled the big ends of yup perty much the same so i think i wonder how the pistons are ....... gee they were great come out real easy and so did all the lil bits of ring
the top ring an all 4 had shatterd into lil pieces so i have a set of 60 thou hyper techs just need to see if graham has any rings to suit and get him to have a quick look at the bores for me

i guess i have to remove that great lump of lead of my foot hmmmm i wonder if i should get someone else to run my motor in for me

Hey mick,

Well hmmm to look on the good side of things.. at least the gearbox is ok...

Hmmm Yeah i only ran that motor for a month or two... Never had that motor out to work..

Just had the timing chain done too a duel row one...

Good luck in the future with it...

Woohoo :!: the future is on its way 8)

GR reckons the centre main bearing spun because the cap bolt had bottomed in the thread, not enough clamping force. apparently fairly common, and simple cure is to add ARP washers under the bolts, or grind the end down slightly.

Good news is that he and Spiro the crank man reckon the crank is salvagable. it is not cracked and can go to 40thou bearings.

so - Spiro is doing the crank next week $120 for 3 mains and all 4 big ends. That is a bargain in my book. No stroking, as i don't want to get the cooper s rods at this point.

-GR has the head and will do his thing with that adding 1.4" inlet valves, grind the camshaft into a RE13, and once i have the mains in the block and the caps line bored, he will rebore for 73.5mm pistons.

think i need to get some double valve springs and some pressed steel rockers, do a pulsar dizzy, clean up the 45mm dellorto and rebuild the gearbox.

i will be busy next week :D aiming for February to use it

more news as it comes

I'd replace that diff pin with a comp one and fit new spider gears... before the new 1380 gives it more curry...

They are cheap insurance whilst it's apart..
Ask MrBob....

yeah Kev, diff pins were always part of a gearbox rebuild plan.

i'm just glad to have finally started

i've got to go back to GR next week, so i'm going to talk rockers, zorst etc with him, make sure i get what goes with the rest of the stuff he is doing.

oh yeah my dellorto/weber manifold has Lynx S stamped on it and is about 4" in length, about 40deg angle on it. obviously not a redline, but how far away is it?

<edit> never mind i found an old thread where i had already posted pics of it. drmini said "That manifold looks OK, you could see thru it (my rule of thumb...) "

Yeah the short Redline 3005-like Lynx one is OK, the Lynx to avoid is that which has a Z-shaped path thru the port.
They are poo.

cleaned the crap off the manifold and it definitely needs some work. it has really coarse sand casting marks in it and only has the bare minimum of machining on the manifold and carby faces to make them flat. think i'll have to bling it after i get the inside done by someone who knows what they are doing. i might even anodise the outside if i use it.

small problem, when i got the "45" dellorto off a car about 8 years ago, i never cleane it to check. today was the first time i actually cleaned the bastard enough to read 40DHLA on it. so i am going to look at carbie options with GR next week. i may switch to a 1.75" SU, but i kind of like the weber/dellorto sound. there may be a 40 mm weber and dellorto for sale soon to pay for it.

Mick I wouldn't junk that 40DHLA just yet, you can get chokes up to 37mm for it (unlike a Weber). I'm sure a 1380 will make that work..
See www.dellorto.co.uk where I get my bits from.
10.95 pounds ea, & their postage is cheap. :D
