Post subject: | Leaking oil at 90k's an hour |
Was driving down the freeway today for 20 mins (90k/h) and I started to burn up oil like nobodys business. Got to my gf's house and found that oil vapour was "pouring" out of my rocker cover... ![]() Now I limped back home at 70km/h and it was fine (it's been fine driving around at 60/70 for weeks). Why is it burning oil in such excess when taken to 90k's?? The only other time it's done this was for about thirty minutes after I'd started the drive home on the freeway when I bought the car off mooman, after 30 mins it stopped doing it. I put in oil enough to make it go to full on the dip stick a few days ago, and i've been told it's got the wrong dip stick in it and there's something broken off inside so they can't just change it over (?). What I'm thinking is because of this, the oil stick is inaccurate and so the engine burns off the excess oil but only when pushed to 90k/s an hour and beyond? Does this make any sense? I could just drive it on the freeway till it stops doing it and then mark that level ont he dip stick so I know that's the limit, but i'm thinking a better way is to do an oi/filter l changeover and put in new oil and then mark whatever comes up on the dip stick as full for future reference. Anyone know how much oil goes into a rover, my mini book doesn't cover them.. I'm guessing it's the same as a standard 998 though (4.5-5L from memory). ...thanks guys ![]() ![]() Shard |

Maybe it is something to do with having high RPM for extended periods of time.... and maybe also your crankcase ventilation is inadequate/blocked, which is making the pressure find another way of escaping.... Higher revs = higher pressure = faster oil loss???? Dont know if you can understand this...... I can think of something but its hard for me to describe. |

I was thinking the same thing, Nath. If the engine hasn't got the right breathers on it, after longish drives sitting on around 100, pressure within the engine can cause things like blowing oil past the oil rings and once stopped, can cause the oil seals to leak quite bad! |

Hm when I was at link last they said my tappet breather was partially blocked, they also replaced my standard rocker cover with a breather type and said that should do the trick. If it leaked oil consistently on the drive home from kaniva and when i've been driving it locally it would probably be a breathing issue I think, but it only seems to do it once i've topped up the oil to full according to the dipstick. I'll eliminate the excess oil route first as that's easiest by doing an oild change sometime over the weekend and then go the breather route. edit: also was on the freeway for 5-10 mins tops yesterday when it started doing it. |

You are right to dump the oil....overfilling can do serious damage to an engine. I would completely drain the sump and oil filter.....then refill with exactly 4.8 litres/8.5 pints and see where that comes up to on your dip stick...and note that for the future Then go hunting possible breather problems. |

Yep sounds good, cheers guys. Victorian rego battle one day, oil and radiator holes the next, you know how it is ![]() Shard |

grr not a simple trip down to supercheap for a new screw on filter as it's running a element type (ryco k12200). Whats a rover998A+ doing with an older style filter? Most mini places are closed at the moment but what's involved with a changeover to screw on type, is it easily done? I've googled ryco k12200 and *nothings* coming up, is it worth calling repco and trying to order it in or hanging out till after the new year to go the conversion route when the mini places open? Shard You need the spin-on filter housing, 2 short 3/8" UNC bolts, & a different gasket. Can either buy new or rob off a dead 998 Clubby.. ![]() Filter is same as a Toyota V6 Camry. |

I was thinking Doc.....and geeez it hurt ![]() It maybe wouldnt be hard to convert the older style mount to a spin on... thin stud up into the body...transitioning to some course thread for a small spin on.....like the one on my VS Commode... Couple this with a thin blanking plate, located/held in place by the stud, suitable drilled for flow and made to accept whatever filter type you chose..... Hmmmmmmmm ![]() |
