How long is a piece of string???? The cost of rings is about the same as a set of brand new pistons (which come with rings for free) which is around the $200 mark. Buying the parts is the easy bit..... somebody needs to remove your gearbox from your engine to get access to the conrod bolts that, when removed, will allow you to get the pistons out of the bores to replace the rings. This all takes time. Time costs money. And you will also need a new set of gaskets for the gearbox, aswell as (possibly) new con rod big end bearings....... I'd say 5 or 600 bucks should cover it. |

I've heard most of the times when your rings need replacing, you pretty much need a fresh rebore anyway.. is this true or nah? |

You might get lucky and not need any machine work done, but I don't like your chances. It's stupid to have the engine appart and only replace the rings if everything else needs doing aswell! Have a yarn to Pete at Bellarine Mini Centre, he should be able to help you (if you don't live too far away). It's the place where the Queenscliff run finished. Tell him Scott sent ya.

A proper hone would be advisable, if not mandatory. And yes, since youve gone to the trouble of cracking open the engine, why not drop in some new lifters, and even a better cam, and then a duplex timing chain set..... |

In my experience most A series with worn rings also have worn bores- a hone job won't get rid of the taper and wear at top of cylinder so ring seal will suffer. A set of rings these days for a 1098 can cost up to $130, pistons with rings not that much more. Been there done that- nowadays if my motor need rings I rebore to next oversize and fit pistons too. Mmmm... fresh bores + fresh pistons + correct clearance = GOOD result. 
ps. And if run this far, I bet the crank will need a regrind too.
