Looks shagged in several respects.

Smallbore valves are cheap. :D

Get a new set, and fit 8 new guides- they are shagged too...

I am rebuilding an engine for the first time with a couple of books as my only guide and I have no idea what I am doing!

Anyway, it's all a learning experience. So good Dr, are the guides the round disc like bits that the collets sit in?

And thankyou for the offer Clubman, I am rebuilding a spare so no need for a quick head replacement. I will let you know bout the valves though..........

nah, we got an engine off Mr. Brickworx for the mini1000, just gonna put some new rings in that one and see how it goes......

This one is in pieces and not running and with no experience I am not confident of doing a great job. That is why we needed an engine that ran for mini1000

Coincidently though, both engines are stamped 9YATAH. Is that spooky or are there heaps of these going around?

No, the guides are the round bushes in the head that the valves go into.
If the valves stems are worn as yours appear to be, the guides will be worn too.
Good practice is to fit new guides, whenever you fit new valves...

thankyou very much doc. I read a thread about the type of head I have which is ecam 4004 and you mentioned that the 12g202 is much better. All I am after is a reliable engine, not necessarily the fastest. With that in mind is it worth spending the time and money on this one, or source a 12g202?

thankyou for your help and advice thus far

cheers, Nunny

Yes Mick, I run them in Ha-Ha, which has plain S/S race valves (incompatible with iron guides).
No, they don't last any better than iron ones do.
And valve stem seals should only go on the inlets with these, as the ex ones need some lube.

Cast iron guides are less trouble, if using standard valves.
BTW in UK they seem to call these guides STEEL, but they are not so.

I've found you need to ream the bronze ones ALWAYS after fitting, as they shrink- but the iron ones don't seem to change size.

Some S/S valves these days have chromed stems, so can run in stock cast iron guides.

Many racers use iron guides with K-liners fitted, this gives the best of both worlds but costs more $$.. of course!!
