I recently bfound out what i thought was a 1100 engine is actually a 1275 registered asa 1100 whatdo i need to do to the drums to make it legal or do i have to put discs :shock: on

Well it depends.. I know of several Minis with 1275s pretending to be 850 or 998.. but the owners are happy.:)

Up here in NSW, discs are mandatory if fitting a 1275, because all 1275 Minis came with them. Probably the same rule in most states.

Yeah I know there was a 1275 Moke with drums... :lol:

Ok then what discs can i fit on with my 10 inch rims and what should i be looking at paying

And the last 20-30 base model clubby's had leftover 1275's and drum brakes (I've seen 2) , Leyland was doing their "cast off the excess gear" specials . Doesn't do any good to the RTA though , I tried arguing that a few years ago as I was using the 1275 that came from one of them , the donor clubby was registerred with the 1275 and drum brakes as per the factory but they said they knew of the few oddities and it didn't matter , 1275 equals disc brakes unless it's in one of the oddball clubby's or the export model Moke (by the way , a mates selling a pretty good export moke with it's 1275 intact and running , I think it's still registerred in NSW as well , the bodies good , PM me if you want to know more) . But that's NSW , don't know any other states rules .

For 10" most common setup is the cooper S discs.. second hand you're looking at around $1000 new about $1700

Steamer, discs are mandatory in SA with the fitment of a 1275.

Cooper S discs are the go under 10s. Not cheap, though. About $12-1500 :(

New ones will set you back even more than that.

Really the only brakes available that fit properly with 10" wheels are Cooper 7" or Cooper S, 7-1/2".

A new set of S brakes is ~$1600-1800.
You can get s/h ones cheaper on ebay, but by the time you buy them and fix them, they are often not a bargain.
A few people here got their fingers burned with this..

Cooper 7" ones I would forget about, unless someone GIVES you a set. They are not as good, and price and availability of spare rotors etc is not good.

Yes, I know Hondas Civic/City ones can be made to fit (we have a set) but there are too many compromises that need doing to fit them in 10" wheels. And they only fit in some alloys, and no steel ones..
Also, really they need to be engineered, and turning rotors down etc is not a great place to start.

The bugger for those of us starting out with 10's is that it is about the same price no matter which route you take

10" wheels and expensive disks [7.5's]

or

get the cheaper disks [8.4's or better] but have to buy new rims as well [12's or 13's] and the rubber to go on them.

Heres my two cents...
Regency want minimum 7.5" disc brakes...
pretty easy... fit cooper S, Moke or Rover Brakes.
End of it...NO
Increased wheel track... illegal.
These stupid rules just don't stop coming.

pfft, just get the roadworthy done somewhere that doesn't specialise in minis, then rock up to your rego place and innocently put the paperwork in front of them - they won't check - no-one in victoria ever does....

We don't have car inspections at any place like the rest of Australia...
Wel only have one place... REGENCY PARK.
and they know more about mini chassis and engine numbers that they let on...many a car has been called in for a full inspection.

ME.

I'd be looking for some good, still working, 7.5in discs. Keep the 10s.
I bought a set off our good mate Brickworx, and they stopped way better than i ever expected. I never did any maintainence to them, either. Took me an afternoon to put them on by myself. An 850 with S discs! Its important to get a set that are straight off a car, not some that have been sitting in a shed for years rusting away.
