Post subject: | 998 engines! |
This may seem like a stupid question, but do the 998 engines sporty or much much efort does it take to get them to a reasonable performance level. I'm looking for a clubman (or roundy) and was wondering if purchasing one with a 998 engine would have the get-up-and-go, as i am looking for something with a some "balls" Thankyou! |

my 998cc clubby struggles on hills and dosen't have that greater excel as i would want it too. still love her though. and she dose drops squeely's when she wants to. ![]() but the mini i drove on the mini cruize in sydney had a 998cc engine aswell and it went beutifully. i couldn't belive how a 998cc engine could have that much power and the fact that mine didn't. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

My 998cc goes like a cut snake - yes the 1275's are better but I love the squeal of a 998 as you put the boot in. Practically they last longer too(mine ticked over 220,000km last week - factory original engine too engine too !). Still trying to blow it up so I can put the new motor in(998 +30 thou over) Hooroo Rob Forsyth Miniot!! |

hello, Yeah 998's can be made to "get up and go" with the rite mods like .LCB extractors and free flowing exhaust, 12G202 head with a bit of port work, a cam change, swapping the 998 cam for a 1100 cam is a little better, but with a good head you should be looking at a RE13 cam, ground by russel engineering (look in mini mods for info about that one!),also a electronic pulsar dizzy will give it MUCH better response and it will rev harder... While you have done all this, you might be looking at a bigger carbie.you have a fue oprions there! .standard 1 1/2 SU,single 1 3/4 SU,twin 1 1/4 SU's,twin 1 1/2 SU's,40mm weber/dello,45mm weber/dello and a fue others people use the single 1 3/4 and 40mm weber/dello alot on 998's and it will sorta depend on what head/cam you are running. Its best to ask a fue people about that one as iv not used them all. If you still wanna go more then its time to pull it apart, then you can bore it out to a bigger size for more power. lighten the fly wheel, ballance the internals and so on.. you also have the option to swap the crank and pistons over for the 1098 items. you could also pocket the block and use a 1275 head while the motor is apart. while the motor is out you would look at getting your 2nd gear syncro done if its not in VERY good condition (all thoes power shifts will take its toll), While in the gearbox a central oil pick up Hope this helps a little bit, |

"I'd tend to stroke a 998 instaed of bore it" actually, technically speaking, You'll get more HP from a bore job, than a stroke of the same capacity.. It unshrouds the valves more, and doesnt affect the stroke / rod length ratio (and the associated airflow velocities and so forth...) Personally, I stuck a hairdryer to the side of mine, and killed all the small-blocks in one fell swoop.. (and a majority of Big-blocks too!) Yes, its a 998 (+0.020") . . . . . . . J |

yep 998's are a good engine.. they do suffer from asthma in standard form, but so does the 1100cc and the 1275 is overrated - being as smooth as a fat chicks thighs covered in cookies and cream and as quiet as a bucket of rusty nails with some heavy petting, the 998 will go balls deep and i would bore it first and if that wasnt enough i'd boost it like james'.. i would never stick an 1100 crank in a perfectly good 998.. |

I am getting a new motor built for my 998 LS. The engine has been bored out 40 thou and is now 1049cc. It has new ACL pistons, cam bearings, double row timing chain and a performance cam. The 12G202 head is getting some work on it plus the flywheel is getting lightened and balanced. I will be putting electronic ignition on (anyone have a Pulsar one already built and wanting to sell??). 1.50"SU, extractors and sports exhaust system.. |
