Hey all,
I've got a great big dirty flat spot in 1st gear when taking off.
It just doesnt stop does it? (Fixing cars that is)

I know how you feel. I went for a very late afternoon drive on Wednesday and was right inthe middle of the National Park when the car just stopped. Fading light 7:30pm, no phone, no money. Due to all the NEW bumps in the park a whire on the coil had come loose. Took me a while to find it but that's mini driving for you. |

Don't get me started , you don't want to hear about baulkum hills to goulburn with a seized clutch thrust race at 4:30 on a friday afternoon , a rotor button that had a worn tip so it just sparked when it felt like it , a possessed wiring harness that turned the fuel pump off whenever it felt like it , the South African mk 4 mini that had a dodgy clutch master cylinder that held pressure on the clutch so the centre mains wore out in 6000 klm's and the million and one other mini problems I've had over the years .... Why do we keep playing with mini's , any sane person would've given up long ago , then again , maybe that's why we do , we're not sane ...... |

I had the nut fall off the points inside the dizzy now that was interesting..... Also blown my thrust bearing - not fun... But hey, new problem every weekend (at least we're not bored) 
But....how does one get rid of said flat spot? |

I went to a supersprint meeting a couple of years ago. While I raced against the clock to get the 100th little thing fixed that had gone wrong that morning, the gu in the next garage arrived in his WRX unpacked his stuff then sat down to read the paper. I said to him "That's not real motorsport - fix something" |

I think you will probably have to tell us some more about it ie: Is it just in first? what sort of carby are you using? have you checked the timing? any air leaks? where is the rev range is the flat spot? running rich running lean? etc etc Why doesn't it occur in other gears? I take it does it getting the revs off idle? |

Nope, previously checked this. where is the rev range is the flat spot? From idle (about 900) - 1500-2000 (I think, I dont have a tacho) running rich running lean? not sure |

Sticky vacuum advance in dizzy?? There would be full vacuum advance at idle and it's supposed to go back to mechanical advance only once the manifold vacuum disappears. I suppose it could cause a flat spot that you wouldn't get in other gears??? To check use a timing light at idle then disconnect vac line to dizzy and plug end. Total advance should drop from lots to about 8 deg. No drop = rooted vac advance. My 2c but I know nothing... |

your points are opening and closing as the motor goes around? easy to check... done the check for fuel pumping to the carby at the right hand firewall?? think back to the last thing you did, from the time when it was running...its usually something little that you have done (like me on my vehicles from time to time) |
