its bloody hot in QLD and you know what that means, is there a better radiator i could get!!! |

Better than what ? I run a basic 3 core, works pretty good when not doing a freeway run. Pretty sure 4 core sports ones are pretty good...but im not 100% on that. |

4 core is good (I've got one) but they are HUGE and only JUST fit in a "round-nose" I'd reccommend the 2 core.. everyone seems to rave about them... if i hadnt boght a new 4 core, it would have been the 2 core... J |

I've got a new 2 core in the 1293, it is not as good as the new 3 core (and freshair heater) in the 1360. Considering the 2 core rad is 100 bux dearer (around $250 now) I reckon you are better just to add a heater core to what you have now- plumb it in between back of head and the bottom radiator hose takeoff.

Hi Guys, I seem to to have the overheating on the highway thing happening too... around town its fine, but as when I try and push the speed over 90 on the highway heading from melbourne to geelong (and parts beyond), it overheats, and pretty much have to drive at 85 or so. I really need to look at this, as i also carry things on the roof rack which of course add to the problems. I tend to drive at least 4 or 5 hours on highways over the weekend, so I really need to get this sorted. The plan at the moment is to replace the current cooling system (the mini is fairly new to me, so I'm not sure when this was last done). So, new rad, water pump, hoses, thermostat etc etc. So, based on experience, whats the best combination of parts to use? New 4 core rad? Will this be enough, or will it still over heat? Can I please get a little more information on the heater core idea that was mentioned before? A photo would be great. Its a 78 Clubman, 998, pretty much stock. cheers David |

a stock motor should have no problems with extended driveing take the car and get the rad and motor flushed first do it your self if you know what you are doing if all else fails get the rad place to do a system test to see what is failing makka |

Thanks Makka, Must admit, cos the car is new to me, and I have no real idea of history I'm leaning towards 'if in doubt replace it" at the moment. If I get new parts, and replace them myself, I know at least that area of the car has been down properly, and shouldnt have to have any major work done on it for a while. Good thought on the rad company though.. it might be something simple and then I can use the money for something else on the mini  Fixing the rear passenger side brake shoe that's just started draging might be a good start.. very annoying.

Minis dont have a lot of cooling capacity so the cooling system must be right to cope with hotter weather. If a car is running hot then it means there is one of two things happening. 1. There is not enough air passing through the radiator or 2. The is not enough coolant circulating around the system. You only need a 25% reduction in either of the two above and its going to run hot. I have just purchased off ebay, and taken delivery of a brand new 3 core radiator from Minisport in SA for my wife's 1100s which has been also running hot in this recent weather. It already has a new water pump so hopefully a good flush and a new radiator will solve that problem. If not I will put the auxillary radiator (heater core plumped between head outlet and bottom radiator hose inlet - As doc suggests) back into the system. I will let you know how it goes. |

Kev, I was reading a thing on a Mini gathering in Canada where KC pointed out that half the hundreds of engines had their fans on back-to-front....impeding the air flow rather than assisting it to extract heat out under the guard. The problem is also reasonably common in Aus as well....this might be a great little sticky for the How to??....(plse Dr  )

on anything other than a really worked motor - get the radiator tanks taken off and the rad cleaned properly, flush the block out until the water comes out clean, and put in a new high flow water pump and thermostat... any overheating problems after that need the help of a professional. I can't keep the engine in my cooper S hot enough, and it's all 100% stock |
