Post subject:  Rod Change Steady bushing replacement

Anybody here changed the bushing that's in the back of the gearbox housing which the steady bar bolts up to? Mine is allowing a heap of movement giving me lots clunking and shite, and it looks like a bastard to replace.

Any nifty shortcuts or hints would be greatly appreciated

Cheers,
Phil

Truth #1- it's in a spot where you can't swing a BFH, never mind a cat.. :x

The one on our Clubbie collapsed, no big surprise. BL made them from natural rubber so they disintegrate when they get oil on them. As they do....

Soooooo, I used bodge #256 (better than original)-
Get some Lurethane rod, either blue or green grade- turn up a bush from it to fit the bolt neat and be a nice tight fit in the metal sleeve (which you leave in there).

There, done!
Easy wasn't it. BTW, oil leakswon't hurt the lurethane bush- it should outlast the car. 8)

Thanks doc, just wondering if I was gonna be able to do it myself. Seems like I'll be giving my friendly mechanic another excuse to swear for an hour or three

At 70 bucks an hour (unless he's very very very friendly) he'll be swearing to do more work for you.

If it's the bush I'm thinking of, the replacement part is *very* expensive, considering it is after all just a piece of rubber. I didn''t bother replacing mine coz it looked hard & expensive!

yeah, sumtin like 30 bucks for that pissy little bushing.

well, since my back has been playing up like hell, I'm not gonna bust a valve trying to do it myself. and if he charges 70 bucks an hour, he'd wanna be gold plating it for me.

I am seriously considering yer idea doc, where can I get the urethane rod from??

Any place that sells plastic, eg Cadillac Plastics in Sydney. Gotta be someone like that up in FNQ...
Or, try a toolmaker- they make stuff from it all the time.
