Post subject:  Pulsar Dizzy and and ode to mechanics

Just came back from Castle Hill with the new Pulsar dizzy in the car and the old Lucas one in a double black bag which I took out of the boot with heavy gloves and a six foot pole and hid at the far corner of the garage surrounded by a line of white chalk, silver crosses and garlic, lots of garlic.

Anyways this dizzy mod (or rather conversion) is briliant and surprisingly so. I always tried to defend Lucas from the Lucas bashers and advocated some attempts at originality, but here its hard to argue any other way. This setup is far superior to anything Lucas produced, even to those expensive Aldon electronic distributors. The car was behaving like a dog for a few weeks now but on the way home the feeling was like heroin (not that I ever tried, here see my veins). I felt like I've got not several extra hps but like a dozen plus and an improvement across the entire band. Well when I calmed down and strarted testing her on the fairly empty streets (10pm, long way from C'Hill to Coogee) in low, mid and high range I realised that part of the increase was just a self induced euphoria from driving the girl again, the car was still a mini but there was a SIGNIFICANT, IMMEDIATELY NOTICEABLE improvement and funnily enough all the way from 2,500 to 6,500. The car obviously needs more tuning and had gerky acceleration, I never encountered real traffic conditions (even though I tried simulating them), night driving is also different to daytime and she was too cold the whole way ( I know it sounds unlike a mini but it does happen) but you can still feel like if not a whole new beast then one which had a nice hairdo and shaved some of the fur on her legs and is much more attractive and feminine though you will still get dirty and tired. Especialy if your Lucas is tired and wobbly (arent they all) this is a worthwhile fix and in terms of build it feels much more solid, theres no wobble in the spindle like in all the Lucas units and much more springiness).

Now I said it before and I'll say it again my mechanics (Mini Spares and Repairs in Castle Hill) are great. I dont usualy do this lame stuff but seriously they offered to come in way after hours to unlock the place when my tow truck ran late so I wouldnt have to leave the car in the street. They are willing to spend tons of time on the phone or in person discussing problems I've got with the car and the best ways to solve them and they are always genuinly concerned not just booking time to charge you. Tonight after picking up the car at 5pm I stayed infront of the garage to replace my fan (too cheap and broke to pay them to do it) and it being a bitch of a job and I missing a bit of my finger at the moment was taking a long while and both Gareth and Ivan came out to check I was alright and didnt need anything. Ivan stayed and helped me out saving me the need to take out the radiator and lent me tools and Gareth phoned me at like 12 at night to see the car was alright and the new dizzy was working.

Again I know endorsements sound lame but there was a guy there today (not gonna name anyone) who is one of the many people whom a certain Brookvale retailer screwed and promissed to call again but never did :) I'm just lucky I've got decent mechanics and decent people working on my car.

Best thing to do with old Lucas dizzys now is keep the drive dog (for a Pulsar dizzy!) and junk the rest.

Check your spark plug gaps- you can run around .040" now for fatter sparks and better? economy.

does the pulsar dizzy need to be recurved?

Hmmm... depends which Pulsar one and what motor and what state of tune and... and..... etc.

I had a Lucas 45D with Pertronix in my modified 1310, which had 10* dizzy mech advance. I've changed it for a Pulsar D4R85 manual dizzy, which has 12* dizzy mech advance. It's smoother all the way to 8000 rpm.. so I think it's a good match.

I put a Pulsar D4R83 auto dizzy in Josh's modified 1098. It has 16* mech advance in the dizzy. Again, it's smoother, got lots more power.

Gareth had an auto one in his 1330, he's now swapped it for a manual one. Sez it's better.

Reason they make the motor run smoother I believe is there is no slack in the bearings or the advance mechanism, like there is in 99% of old Lucas ones....

I'd recommend the Pulsar auto one for smaller motors, and the manual one for 1275 up.

No,I don't think it's essential to recurve them- unless you got a dyno and a dizzy graph, you will probably do more harm than good.

harm to the wallet is all i'm really worried about.. so i'm glad the recurve isn't really necessary.. :)

has anyone got a pic of the 80's pulsar so i know what to look for if i'm out and about

i know i could just google it but, you know.... :)

also, i've managed to obtain myself a MSD 6A thingo and knowing how much i don't really need to install it, do you (drmini) reckon it'll work ok with ( or even without the pulsar dizzy?

Pulsar dizzy is already electronic- I'd sell the MSD to a boy racer..

Would more than pay for the dizzy...

<edit> Pulsar is a 1600cc N12 model. late 80s..
Dizzy cap has 2 screws holding it on.

Avoid the early ones with spring clips on the cap- they have points...

Besides this type of dizzy what else is needed to get it to fit into a mini? I'm looking to fit one to my 998(stock +40thou) and my mate to his 1098(worked +60thou)

Whilst on the subject of electronics which alternator is it from which pulsar and what's needed to get that to fit?

cheers.. doc

but i'm a bit nervous about selling on the MSD as i got it fo' nuttin' :?

and he keeps asking "have you put the msd on yet?"

i might just tell him i lost it , or ate it or something.... or maybe sell it back to him :)

so...erm.. what do you reckon i'd get for it

Only other parts you need are a Mini drive dog, and a Mini spring (roll) pin for same.

Only machining needed is drill the Pulsar shaft hole 3/16"for the Mini pin, and cut/linish or file the Pulsar flange mount to fit the Lucas clamp plate.
20 mins work, unless the drive dog is a bit too close to body to fit a thrust washer- then machine 1mm approx off the top of it.

Thanks drmini you are a legend 8)
All i need to do now is to convince the finance minister (aka missus) to free up the purse strings to allow a few reliability upgrades to be completed i.e dizzy + alternator

When you turn on the headlights and the stereo is up it looks like i'm at a club with flashing lights or rather dimming ones and the engine misfires and carries on until I turn the stereo down. + i have also got spotlights which get used every night on my way home from work cause there aren't any street lights until i get close to home plus to many skippy's trying to meet the front of my mini at 100km/h. All this adds up to a fried battery pretty quickly so i want everything to be able to run off the alternator like it should, so a 74amp alternator as opposed to a 15 amp seems like a good idea to me.
My falcon has the same stereo setup and spotlights and has small issues with dimming lights on it's std alternator which i think is 80amps most of which go to the computer i think
