Hi guys and tea makers...

I had a bit to drink yesterday and as a result, started buggering around with the car.

So I took the dashboard out just to see how it looked.

it's this style (thanks makka)

but it's very faded. (excuse the mess)

Typically, i don't have a picture of the shelf without the dash

it's only a veneer but i was thinking of getting someone (f. in-law) to see if he can make up one out of solid timber. and if it looks good, i might put it in or flog it off. (i might even get him to make a couple more and flog them off too :) )

i'll see if i can get a pic up tonight so the masses can cast their verdict. i happen to think it makes the car look alot more vintage without the dash. (The wife thinks it looks dumb without the dash so i think i like it without even more  )

While i had the screwdriver in my hand, i thought i'd have a go at getting the door glass out, (1 x bottle of pinot noir doing the thinking, remember)

but the screws were rusted and i couldn't budge them(even with crc). Will that mean they'll have to be drilled out? (lucky i couldn't find the drill last night!)

I decided then that i'd try a "Rolling Restoration". Since my car is grey anyway, it won't look anymore dodgey than it is if i'm driving around with a few panels in primer. :)

i've been looking at the pic in my signature for a while (it's photoshopped to take out the rust :) ) and i'm starting to like the white and i'm thinking that'd be a good clour to try..

i think i need more tools....

Heehee.......dats funny.......give a man a decent bottle of booze and he pulls his Mini apart.........think you need an impact screwdriver for those hard to budge screws mate.

An impact screw driver is all that should be used on those screws IMO.. If you find that you still cannot get them out. Get yourself one of those butane torches and lightly heat up the area around the screw. You will then find that they will easily come out.

I had a similar problem with Granny and in fact one of the heads of the screw was broken off :(.. But I ended up drilling it out with a dremel and a steady hand and constantly checking to see that I was drilling it out straight and level. I then used a good quality easy out from Bunnings to try and get it out. But it was still very tight. So I did not want to break the easy out otherwise I would have never gotten the rest of the screw out. So what I did was heated up the surrounding area of the screw with my butane torch. Put the easy out back into the screw and it came out easily :).

would the hammer setting on a drill work?

enough about my windows... what about the dash... :)

No dont use the hammer setting on a drill it will only make things worse for you.. Get an impact driver they are not that expensive. I think I paid $20.00 for mine and you will be able to use it on many other scews especially the ones to get your brake drums off.. Once you use one of these you will wonder how you ever lived without it..

In regards to the dash I like the woodgrain dash myself :)..

If your talking about the black cover plate in front of the gear stick up near the firewall. That is the opening for what they call a magic wand gear stick setup..
