Hi all. Umm. I may have done something stupid.... Well i've actualy done a lot of stupid things. What i mean to say is, i may have just done something stupid to my mini. I thought i might try to start my van (resto project i have just bought). I dont have a spare battery or a key for it. So i disconected the wires from the ignition and put a jumper on them (ie hotwire style). Then dissconected the neg from my daily driver's battery and ran jumper leads, from the battery leads in the van, to the battery in the daily driver. Ok fuel pump fired up in the van. Press the floor mounted starter sol. Quietness erupted. Disconected the jumper leads. Took the battery right out daily put it in the van. hook up. fuel pump fires up press starter sol. fuel pump stops. I came to the conclusion that it is in the to hard basket for today. So i put the battery back in the daily, hooked it up, Then went to go put him back in the carport. BUT when i turn the key to accesories nothing happened and there is just no power anywere in the car? I took off and cleaned the battery terms.. still no Change the starter sol for a new one i bought on friday.... still nothing Try changing the ignition coil for one that i replaced for no reason a couple of months ago..... still nothing Try a different ignition barrel.... nope nothing I know i might not have needed to try a few of those things but i'm clutching at straws. I dont get it. When i tryed to jump the van i disconected the neg. So there was no circut in the daily. Could i have fried something none the less? I also changed the fuses by the way. There is just no power in the car? i get a good strong reading on the multimeter accross the battery terminals but with the ignition on there is no power crossing the starter sol to accesories. Please... any help or sugestions would be apretiated. IE the name daily driver. |

Ha Dont you love it when you stuff something. Scream for help, and go type a request for assistance for half an hour. Then go outside and turn the key and the car just laughs at you as i starts, like there was never anything wrong? God fracking damb it. Ok well i guess that one will be popping up from time to time now untill i figure out what wire is loose and where. Ok thanks anyway. |

What can I say , it's a mini , it's wiring harness is home to several demons who love nothing more than to stuff your day when you least expect it ..... Maybe replace the connectors on the hot wire from the ign to the starter solinoid though , mainly the starter solinoid , one of mine used to get a bit of corrosion in there and stuff up regularly , I changed the connector every year before rego and it behaved itself for the next 11 months . Don't know what was going on but it'd just die , no power , no life .... |

Are you sure your battery is not stuffed? |

I was thinking it might be an issue with the starter button itself. All the cars power runs thru it.... so if one of the nuts underneath it is loose you wont get clean power to either the starter motor or the whole system.. Once the engine is running, you can remove the battery (disconnect it at the starter button) and the alternator/generator will create enough power for spark and light. But, if you say you replaced your floor starter button and had no initial improvement, my guess is that you may have an earthing problem. Check your earths where they connect to the body (next to the battery and under your clutch cover) - unbolt them, sand or wire brush the mating surfaces then reconnect. Connections will still work if they are dirty, but somewhat inefficiently. The current wil "arc" across a dirty connection if possible...... and sometimes it wont even do that. More so when the battery hasnt recharged fully from the last time you started the car. If none of that helps, its time to inspect your wiring loom. Pay close attention to locations where the loom passes thru holes on the steel work (eg: behind the speedo) or under the metal fastening tabs (eg: under the dash and under the windscreen wipers). Steel panels can cut thru wiring looms thru vibration, leaving exposed wires that could short each other out. I have had this problem in a previous mini and was forced to replace the whole front loom. Fun and games, yeah right. PS.... if thats your mini in your avatar..... seen it and like it ![]() |
