Decided to clean and tidy up my engine bay today. In doing so, discovered that the engine in my clubbie (my daily hack) is a 998! I feel pretty dumb for not checking before i bought it as the previous owner knew nothing about the history of the car. He assumed it was an 1100, being a '73 clubman, and the engine number on the rego has an 1100 prefix. Totally different number stamped on the block mind you. I guess its not such a bad thing though, 998's are smooth little engines and now its prompted me to rebuild my 1100 ive had sitting around for a few years. May even start searching for a roundie to put it in, seeing as the clubbie its sitting in may be beyond repair body-wise.

Just thought id share my stupidity with u all :)

Not stupid at all - if it has served you well then it was a good buy.

I know i will raise some comments and hackles but the 998 motor was probably a quicker motor and more responsive than an 1100 motor. The 1100 certainly have bags more torque but in a lot of ways dont go as well.

It wasn't just the extra few CCs, it was the differences in the length of the stroke that made them quite different motors with quite different performance characteristics but ultimately there wasn't much between them.

Could still have an 1100 in it !! (1100 crank and pistons fit in 998 blocks)

take out a spark plug stick a bit of wire down the hole and measure the difference between TDC(top dead centre) and BDC(bottom dead centre). See whether this measurement is the same roughly as either a 998 or an 1100.

it wasnt me, it was the rust. Its not just rust in the panels, there is rust everywhere. It might be salvagable, but i cant be arsed.
