Post subject:  Dellorto mounting again

Just spent 5 hours trying to find a good way to connect the throttle cable to the 45DHLA. All I've got on the carb is the throttle wheel (realy only a half wheel) and no provision on the Lynx manifold for any cable connection. There are two directions I can pull towards (ie two directions in which the cable attachment can be positioned relative to the throttle wheel. Upwards and towards the manifold to pull on the bottom part of the wheel or downwards and towards the air filter to pull on the top part. But I dont have any decent mounting points around the manifold area and in the other direction any assembly to attach the cable to the bottom of the throttle wheel binds on the edge of the manifold.

Kevin, how did you connect the throttle cable when you had the manifold?

Also I've got that rubber and metal gasket (I think its part of a "soft mount" set) do I need any special washers with it or can I just use it as a normal gasket, coz they are spaces being left between the carb and the manifold, where the bolts pass through.

Sorry I should flame myself, just saw the several topics on the issue in MiniMods.

Still need advice on the gasket though.

I connected it same as shown here on my Redline manifold- this is the original Lynx kit I think.

There are special springy washers used with the softmount kit. Either buy a new kit, or get a stock Weber gasket. You could also make one out of gasket material...

Is the soft mount kit designed to prevent a fuel fire? Do you know if its any good?

The soft mount kit is specifically designed to stop engine vibration getting to the carb. This `can' cause fuel frothing and flooding, according to all the books. But I find a 45 Dellorto on my Mini with a standard gasket has no problem. Most Webers are fitted using the kit.
I took the softmount kit off mine years ago, it gave me 3mm more filter clearance.....

Yes the soft mounts are more likely to leak, as the O-rings settle- as the carb is mounted slightly loose. If you use them keep an eye on them.

this is what i built as at the time i didnt have a manifold and i was bored. as it happened i bought a manifold without linkage provisions so i was able to use the dellorto set up id made ;) i have also made a throttle cable/ stud mount to hold the throttle cable, ill get more pix 2moro.
i think i have the same soft mount kit as you , heres a pic of the whole kit ;)

also i modified the oring assy, i cut the joining piece out as it didnt sit flat and caught the throttle return spring, causing it to stick open flat out  just an added safety measure ;)

Thanks but nothing seems to go right for me. I bought the lynx linkage kit and spent all of last night before work and all of today after work (didnt sleep yet) fixing up a working way of mounting it all since the Lynx manifold is kinda weird in shape and the original mounting holes have been enlarged. Since its so swan necked I had to bring the cable in from the filter's side (the only way as otherwise any mount on the throttle wheel binds on the manifold. Now its setup but as expected the throttle cable is not returning properly as the shape it takes to approach the linkage from the filter side is not the usual perfect semi circle. The only way I can use it is by attaching a fat spring to pull the wheel back.

But ok I go to buy a bigger spring and to look at some better modern cables at the wreckers and when I get home I realise that one of the mounts on the manifold has broken off and there;s a hole to the chamber. I put some sikaflex there to prevent leaks, and it all seems to hold nicely due to the other 3 bolts. Still I cant understand what could have happened. At this point I'm just frustrated and exhausted and I'm gonna go to sleep and get a redline manifold on Monday.

Dr is it cost effective to weld that Alum alloy manifold?

Aluminium welds pretty good with TIG. Might cost you though. Sorry, but I'm not set up for it.

re the linkage- why not just buy a Lynx kit?

<edit> oops I just reread post- U got the kit already..

or make 1 like mine ;) is the soft mount the same ?

Yea I've got the kit but it doesnt work well with the Lynx manifold, there is nowhere to mount the attachment for the throttle cable outer skin (unless I use on of the rocker cover nuts. You also can only really use the top mounting points on the throttle wheel (so the lever action needs to be pushing down) as at the bottom of the throttle wheel it passes at about a 1mm clearance from the manifold when the trottle is opened and if you put a nut through to secure the lever to it it will bind on the manifold and only half throttle can be applied. So I had to make a support for the throttle cable that sits at the air filter and puls the lever towards it. But because of the flexing in the cable or what not it wouldnt return.

What is the bitch is the fact that everything goes wrong including the manifold cracking for no apparent reason (btw what I meant is whether the end result is worth the $50 manifold or should I just find the money to buy a redline one?

And the carb - it might be affected by the crack (even though its sealed and I dont reckon there;s any leakage from there) and it wont work without the choke in. I had the throttle screw all the way in and the mixture screws in all their possible positions (and the engine warm) but without the choke being out (and the carb making that hissing sound) it would just start flattering and spitting below the 1000rpm and dies out. I never worked with dellortos/webers before so dunno what the problem is.

And sorry for all the whinging and questions boys but I really need help here.

Sounds to me like there's an air leak somewhere, making it lean. Is the manifold flat where it goes against the head?

Yea it is, or atleast it seems so. Though there must be some sort of a missalignment coz the top right mount is gone.

I got my tips for the week tonight so gonna buy a Redline one on Monday and see how that will work. Could it be anything else that needs adjusting? I just dont know anything about the dellorto and its operation. It all seems very basic with all the adjustments being done by changing jets, but thats why I'm afraid that its not that easy and I'm missing something.

And frustrating just when the car was finaly working pretty well the manifold doesnt fit the exctractors, the linkage doesnt fit the manifold, the manifold breaks and then the carb doesnt idle. No luck for me this week.

Cant see how you could mount any sort of an effective linkage setup on the Lynx manifold, did you have anything siting on the rocker cover or something?

The cross shaft from memory was mounted on a steel bracket, attached to the 2 top carby mounting bolts.
The throttle cable bracket I think I had mounted on the rocker cover bolt. I didn't use the wheel with all the holes, the Dellorto had an arm on as shown on my current linkage pic I posted. Same basic linkage as now.

Cheers, thanks again. I'll get the redline and see how it goes.
