Post subject:  HELP! The prince is coming!!!!

Ok guys, i'm having a bit of a problem with the electrics in the clubby....when looking at the car from the rear the right hand taillight is not working......however the leffthand taillight is working fine and the brake lights and indicators are working fine on both sides

i dont know where to start here.....i thought the taillights and brake lights were on the same circuit.....

i dont really know a lot about electrics in minis so....has anyone else had this sorta problem?

thanks
-jimmy

the brake lights and tail lights are 2 separate circuits. the bulb itself is twin fillament, one for dull tail lights, and one for bright brakes. the external wiring is separate.

first thing i would do is swap the left and right hand bulbs to remove that question.

if the bulb swap proves both bulbs, on the back of the light cluster, where the tail/brake bulb is there should be 2 wires connected. one is for brake, one for tail. disconnect both and try one-at-a-time running a piece of cable from the positive side of the battery to each terminal. touching one will give u brakes, touching the other will be tail-light. if the tail light doesn't illuminate it means something in the light cluster is dirty or corroded, and you'll have to open it up and clean out all the contacts.

if the lamp lights up, it means you have a power problem, since it's the right hand light chances are it'll be in the wiring between the left lamp and right.

what could also be happening is that your wiring in general is poor condition and there is a lot of resistance, enough to only let one bulb light at a time. i've seen it before. but this is a fairly unlikely scenario, as it's usually the ground that dies and as u say both brake lights work fine

if you have anything in the boot that rolls around it can knock a wire off the connector. this only occurs on the right side because the left side wiring is hidden behind the tank. I am assuming you don't have a right hand tank here

this has been my experience anyway
