500 miles won't hurt it.. Anyhow if you get one to put in you won't lose the oil, if you're quick! ![]() |

can i drive around another 500 ish miles without a magnet should i araldite a magnet onto the outside somewhere Nah, unless you put one of those manetic straps around the outside of the oil filter housing, ohhh, and don't forget the polariser that goes with it!! ![]() ![]() Why don't you see if there is enough meat to drill and tap, or try and temporarily attach (glue) a magnet to the existing sump plug? Have you tried jacking the car up really high on the passengers side? or parking sideways ona suitable slope? to see if the magnet will dislodge and float down to the sump plug area? Bit of a worry having an inch of magnet rolling around in there... ![]() |

I doubt the magnet is in there, would have caught a gear by now... ouch! I stick 20mm dia x 10mm thick `rare earth' (neomiidium or something) magnets to the outside of the spin-on filter. They hold themselves on like a limpet. Yes these DO work. They trap all the stuff below 20 microns? that goes thru the filter paper repeatedly. I know this, 'coz I cut one up for a look. No polarizers needed... ![]() Magnets from http://www.aussiemagnets.com.au/rare_earth.html Enjoy! <edit> while we're talking sump plugs, if you are running a centre oil pickup pipe (like me) the extended sump plug magnet from MiniSpares is a good idea. Picks up more sh!t.. ![]() |

can i drive around another 500 ish miles without a magnet should i araldite a magnet onto the outside somewhere What do you mean didn't fit? All Minis have the same plug... maybe somebody's tapped it out non -standard??? I bought one once where somebody had smashed the corner of the box- the sump plug was a bit of hardwood driven in by a BFH! No magnet... but it didn't leak! ![]() |

yeh i noticed the outer thread of the box was pretty bad, arcs of metal were stringing off the inner thread was pretty good and yeh, the plug is like a huge hex bolt. no internal hollow for magnets hehehe i laugh like a naughty school girl when i hear BFH (big ****ing hammer) i never want to know the real unabbreviation |

If I knew what the thread was now, I could make you one with a magnet in. Sounds like it's been butchered.. ![]() |

It'll help, but won't stop bits of Mini gearbox (gears, synchros, bearings, etc) going thru the oil pump... Try and find another plug/bolt the same, and get it to me. I'll fit a rare earth magnet stronger than the stock one into it. For nix.... ![]() |

I took mine out today. This motor had been sitting for 2 years. Ran well before sitting for that period. The magnet was covered in filings! ![]() |

Oh, just the gears, bearings, synchros, piston rings, bits of the bores & crank... not much really. ![]() If the sump plug magnet didn't catch it, it goes thru the oil pump... ![]() |

![]() Just wondered if there was one part in particular that left more crud on the magnet than others. Anyway, I reckon its syncros in my box. It was a little crunchy gindy when I drove it ![]() |
