Post subject:  Oil leak

Ok I know its old but it has started leaking oil, dripping off the sump. Could be running along from somewhere i don't know. What are the common leak points and how easy are they to fix with engine in, I need to drive the car for work. please help again

accept it and move on. its a mini!!! :lol: :lol:

just put a bit of cardboard down in your garage so you dont stain the floor.


OR you could ahve a look at: timing chain cover, rocker cover gasket, head gasket....basically any join in your motor. make sure all your gaskets are all good.

but at the end of the day, its a mini and it will leak oil. its like tradition! yu will find that in a mini you check the petrol and fill the oil :D

anywhere where you have a gasket, the oil filter and the sump plug if it has a dodgy washer or grit between it and the gearbox housing.

The best thing you can do is thoroughly clean the whole engine and gearbox area including gearchange extension/rod change etc

Do this on a Friday nite, Saturday or Sunday then drive the thing to work.....thoroughly examine every nook and cranny ASAP after the first descent drive. Then report back where the oil is dribbling from :idea:

Jack the car up put it on stands clean the oil off and turn the car on and have a look. If oil is leakinking out of the hole in the bottom of the flywheel housing you could have an oil seal going which will eventually effect the clutch and make it slip.

diff seals could be on the way out but I doubt that would cover the sump.

had any engine work done? hows the engine breathing blowing oil out off the dip stick?

Is there a breather on the rear inspection plate?

It could be a whole pile of things best clean it up then see if you can see were its going from.

You at least are lucky that the weather is warm. When you clean the engine as advised, you WILL need to lie down on the ground in the water and muck. I have taken my ramps in the boot to the local car wash at night when there's bugga all people around, reversed the car up on the ramps, jacked up the front and put the front end on axle stands and taken the front wheels off then gone over the engine etc with a couple of $2 spray cans of degreaser and make sure you do the underneath first, you're lying under the car so by doing it first less crap falls on you. I just wore safety glasses, a cap and very, very old clothes. Then spray degreaser from the top down. Use a stiif brush if the crap is hard. Look out if there is an attendant cos they don't like you using your own degreaser. They want you to use their's which actually doesn't work. Give it all a few minutes on your warm engine to soak in, maybe use your stiff brush and a bit of turps on the real bad places then hit it with the high pressure hose. Try to keep away from the dizzy and spark plugs and make sure you've got some rags to dry them and the leads off if she won't fire up. Don't be a pussy and try to do it without getting under the car. As said, go for a decent drive then look again. Get one of those $2 tarps from Supercrap or someone and park on that. If it's a nice straight downwards drip you'll find it easy peasy like the rod change oil leak. Others travel. Even in daylight use the brightest light you can.
