I'm looking at buying a Morris 1100 engine and gearbox for my Mini, and before I buy, was wondering what is actually involved in changing it over.

If there is too much to do with the gearbox to make it fit, i'll keep on looking for an engine and gearbox from a Mini.

The morris 1100 engine and gearbox combination is not going to just bolt in. It could be made to fit but requires a change of engine mounts and replacing the front two pointed engine mounting plate. The 1100 has a bigger engine bay and the engine mounting is a little diiferent.

Also the (assuming the recipient car has a remote style change) change mechanism is a little different. It has a sandwich plate between the remote and the diff housing. You could use the 1100 remote in the mini. The universal joints could also be different depending on what sort of mini you have.

Having said that, nothing is too hard and it can be made to fit but..... the engine is perfectly compatible with the mini and just dropping the 1100 gearbox off and bolting the 1100 engine to your existing gearbox is probably easier. Its a good weekends work but not that hard. Get a good conversion gasket kit first and a clutch puller kit.

The motor in a Mini mounts under the radiator support on one end and the clutch cover under the other end.
The Morris 1100 motor mounts are attached to the plate behind the timing cover and the same mount as a mini under the clutch cover.

You can mount an 1100 motor in a mini by changing the radiator support bracket. You do not need to remove the 1100 mount. It does take up a little bit of room but it will fit. If you have an oxy you can cut the ears off the mount.

The gearchange on an 1100 mounts differently to a mini and the gearchange is longer. So you cannot really use the 1100 gearchange. (but some people have!) You can change the diff housing from the 1100 one to a mini one as long as it fits! They can be machined a little differently where the bearings fit.

I would use the mini gearbox.

Also I'd point out that the 1100 had a 4.133? or 4.26:1 diff ratio, and high profile 12" tyres- so in a Mini it'll rev its nuts off..

Using Mini box is a better idea, or at least swap its diff in..
