Hi peoples of Ausmini

I think i might get abused for posting this but i cant seem to find proper info so i'll ask u people directly.

What types of minis are there? through this forum people talk about leylands (square) austin(round) mini k's , mokes etc..... Is it possible for you GREAT people to descibe the differences between the different cars?

At first i wanted to buy a mini (influenced by MR Bean movie) but since i joined this forum i have found there are all sorts of different minis. the one im looking at is a 1988 mini Mayfair. Is that a "mini" or just a final attempt for rover to get sales? Or is the "Mini" an actual car out there??

They are all minis :)

FFrom 1959 there is very little that has changed about this great car.

- The older and rarer models are more valuable
- You have your early round noses with sliding windows and 3-syncro gearboxes
- Then they moved on to things such as heaters, wind-up windows and 4-syncro boxes etc

Then in the early 70's they decided to change the shape to the clubman (square nose, slab front, better looking of the two) model.

- They are generally cheaper as they are less desired due to not being the 'original' shape
- Really the ONLY difference for you is the shape from the windscreen forward, almost everything else went unchanged.
- Other differences include guages moved in front of the driver, lift up door handles, square tailights..
- The later you get, the more rust prone they are generally (up to 1978 Oz Cars) earlier cars fared better due to rustproofing.

The 1988 Mayfair you talk about is a Rover and all were round noses - some are fuel inj, though a 1988 would be carb, you might get 8.4" disk brakes and any disk brakes on a mini will add around $1500 to the price, but you'll need to run 12" wheels or above which some say ruins the original handling of the 10" cars.

Rovers are also have Internal Hinged doors and square lights like the clubman and they have rubber mounted sub frames which gives a comfortable ride and less noise, but feels noticeably different to other mini's so it's worth driving as many as you can to get a feel for what you're after.

yep that i think summarises the main points

umm from 1978 onwards there were no minis produced in australia, so the mayfair has been importeed from engand.

but yeah to the average bloke there is no difference from the first 1961 models produced in aus to the last 2000 models produced in england.
(but there is differences - they are all basically the same shape though)

G'day to everyone. In regards to the question there are only cosmetic changes between morris, austin (exactly the same car other than the badges, grille, and a few trim items.....) and leyland clubmans (panels from the a-pillar forward, tail lights etc....they are all based on the same wheel base & floorpan etc.....so i dont think it matters what mini you have or plan to get, they are all great little cars!! Just some require a little more hard work when it comes to the body work depending on what state it is in when aquired.

You'd better put some pics up of the back of the roof of your's Bart for comparrison as we haven't got many original ones down here . I see what you mean though , the rear of the roof looks different .

I'm not sure if there's a gutter at the rear end of the roof on the red one, but even more importantly, the rear window isn't supposed to be rectangular: left and right side are supposed to be like this: / ....... \

Image
Not mine but surely an original pick-up window part.

The window is a part where most of the shopped vans fail, the red one is one of the better conversion though.
