Post subject:  my temperamental mini
Hi all!
i've had my mini for about a week now and i seem to have great difficulties starting up the car...

The first time i start it up is always fine but when i turn the car off for a short period of time eg. filling up the tank and turn it back on, it always fails.... i have to try at least 6-7 times for it to start.

btw car is a 88 rover auto.

what is wrong with it??????

Sounds like a vapour lock (?) problem possibly. Does your fuel line run close to your extractors? Or have I just confused everyone :? ?

maybe wrong spark plugs and there getting to hot after running and failing to fire properly? i would look at the timing first though. Then see if its to lean, does it start ok if you pull the choke?

i just had the same issue.

All I did was change my fuel hose from the pump. It used to run right behind them (about 1" away). I put in a longer hose from the fuel pump to the carbie so it avoided any areas of high heat. It has stopped my car from running on (dieseling) when I turn it off, and has also made it idle better when started after driving in hot weather, and has also made it easier to start in hot weather.

As in it just turns over after you've stopped it for a bit till it starts randomly?

Could be any number of things, starter motor migth be on it's way out, spark plugs faulty, points, condensor might be taking a while to hold enough charge?, same with the starter solenoid...

only way you'll find out is by troubleshooting as it's not a specific 'i'm 100% sure it's that' problem.

Mine has similar trouble, but not consistently.
I thought maybe it was me flooding it :oops:
or just one of those quirky Mini characteristics.

Seems to occur more on hot days, so maybe it is a heat / evaporative issue.

BTW, is it normal for the accelerator to come on FAST (ie: not gradually)?

my vote is for fuel evapouration..

Throttle should be gradual just like any car Edge..

tried starting with the choke out as well.. but the same thing happened again today. Might have to just take it down to the mechanic and get them to check it out again. I've been back and forth from the garage every second day now... :( they don't seem too happy when they see me but neither do i.

where do you guys get your mini serviced in sydney? preferably eastern suburbs.

depending where you are, someone on here may be able to take a look at it for you..

I say before you take it anyway try using a longer fuel line thats routed away from any major heat sources. You may find that in this heat the fuel is evapourating. Will cost you $10 in fuel line, beats paying a mechanic to have a look.

I was thinkin it was characteristic - best look into it & maybe try yr suggestion. :idea:
