What material can be used to cover the Mini firewall stop the fumes from entering the car. Also is there a template somewhere to make it?

If it smells like petrol check and double check all your rubber hoses going into the carby.

I bought some sound deadening stuff that seems to have worked a treat from clark rubber a few weeks ago, wasn't much a meter and was pretty wide so I only needed a meter and a half or so and I still had heaps left over. As for fitting I just measured the width of the firewall and then cut it as I went along height wise. Putting it in as three seperate parts made the job a lot easier too.

G'Day Katzzmandu,
If you have petrol smell then you need something that wont burn  however if you want to keep your car and have SU carburettor(s) look for wet / dirty marks on the float bowl cover. The gasket can leak and there is an overflow hole where the fuel line connects. (could be hidden under a small aluminium cover). This usually means your float is set too high or your float valve is cactus. Cheap to replace esp. seeing your exhaust pipes are just underneath.

If you have a petrol smell, i would be looking into the souce of the problem rather than trying to cover it up..

I could smell fuel occasionly when driving my car. Turned out to be gasses coming through the hole in the gear change boot/ gaiter thing whatever it is.

You can get the black vinyl backed sound deadening from most upholsterers. Works quite well, but isn't flame proof.

I always get the strong smell of petrol if the overflow tube on top of the fuel tank has been disconnected form it's rubber pipe. Fuel goes into the boot and wafts really strongly through to the cabin while driving.

Might be worth a look.

after you have checked the baulk head and carb area for fuel leaks then i would head to the boot and make sure the overflow pipe is connected to your tank at the top and is vented correctly thru the floor.
If the pipe is split brake or nopt connected you will get an overwhelming fuel smell in th car causing hullecenations making you think your car is a ferrari and can out race any one form the traffic lights. damn it must be happening to me all the time then cos i can do that all the time.haha.

check the fuel tank breather pipe to see if its connceted.
