until it hits full on the oil dipstick? :?

I think it used to be close to 4L in my old A series engine.

Between 4.5-5L depending on if you replaced the oil filter or not..

4.2 Litres or
4.8 Litres with new filter

Does that sound right?

Sounds right. I used to add 4L, then run it. Stop. Top up :)

Nearly 5.5 if fitted with oil cooler and given a filter change.

Maybe just the whole five liter bottle then huh?

Mini's aren't over sensitive to oil levels are they?

Save a pint out of that 5L for topping it up next week Mick :P

They are very sensitive if you corner hard and don't have a central pick-up. Need to be over-filled in that case. Too little and zero oil pressure around right handers.

Thanks Moksta,
there's one particular right hander, nice and sharp on the way to work,
that my mini dies on. Now I know why!!
Seemed a very strange coincidence - always that corner.
Maybe I shouldn't drift around it

Sounds more like fuel starvation than oil.

Motor doesn't tell you it's lost oil pressure. It will happily let you think it's all fine. Just makes big noises later.... Loss of power is another issue.

That's right.. I foprgot about those side oil pickup thingies.

The last mini I had with a side pick up was in 1993, it's been that long that I have forgotten about those useless pickups. You would think that central oil pickups would be on most remaining minis by now, they're cheap, plentiful and cure all oil flow problems when hooning about the streets. They've been available for 30 years or more and most mini engines are onto their 200th rebuild by now.

It's always been a part which I have purchased along with the rings and bearings - and in that order of priority as well .
