Hi, just read an ad and it said the mini clubman was deseamed. what does it mean, and is it a good thing?? thanks guys :)

deseaming means the seams which join panels together on the mini have been removed.

the seam is the part that protrudes from a number of areas on the mini (around the roof, and down each "corner" of the mini for example"

it can look very good if done well... similarly i can look particularly bad if not done well.

Looks are the only thing going for it, and even then you have to like the style.

Basically, it makes the car a little less strong. Sometimes on a de-seamed car, if it gets pranged, it falls apart.

I wouldn't recomend doing it to a car that hasn't been de-seamed, but if you are looking at a car that has had it done, make sure it was done right!

i have the money sitting here infront of me and the car trailer, and i live close, and im willing to do it up - ive done up a 66 falcon :oops: its my bf's he has no idea lol

so now i want a lil clubbie of my own...

As everyone has said... deseaming can be good... but it can also be very bad
If i were you i would make sure you have a really really good look at all the seams and maybe take someone along (panel beater / mechanic?) to have a look too make sure its not a crappy backyard deseaming job

hmmm, i dont know a panel beater or a mechanic..... could i get it fixed professionally if it is a crap job?? or should i forget about it n keep lookin??

I'll put my 2 cents worth in , deseamed mini's look good and you can kid yourself that it improves the aerodynamics without too much trouble . Unfortunately , I wouldn't buy a deseamed mini unless I could remove the trim beside the rear window and see behind the other seams to see how it was done . Basically you can grind an inch of seam off at a time and weld the two panel edges together and it will most likely hold till you hit something , depends on how good your welds are as to how big a thing you have to hit for it to fall apart . Or , to do it properly you can weld a strip of metal behind the welded joins as well to tie the whole thing together . As for the panels that you can't get to from behind , best to hammer them a little flatter and weld another strip across them to bridge it as well . The seams we're talking about by the way are the ones that stick out between the front mudguard and in front of the door , the rear side in front of the fuel filler neck and behind the rear side window's , and the roof gutter . As for the one for sale that you want , from memory it's being sold with a month or two's rego left on it , does that mean it can't be registered as is because the job may not be strong enough ? I think it's being sold as a project parts car from memory isn't it (apologies to the seller if it isn't ) .
