No, these things are pretty good on a road Mini if tuned properly. Unlike a sidedraft, they are a twin throat progressive downdraft. Up to 1/2 throttle, it runs on one throat, above that the other kicks in too- and both throats feed all cylinders.
Throat sizes are both pretty small, the secondary is bigger.
I had one of these on my Fiat twin cam...

I think it's low enough to clear the bonnet. U guys are thinking of 48IDA Webers- they DO stick up a long way!

I have been looking out for su's but these seem cheaper and if they do the job for basic performance boost.. maybe these would be easier to come by..??

What would be the easiest addition to this? Extractors and exhaust?

I would have thought there are more twin SU setups about than this one, which I agree would be OK- provided it's jetted properly for the engine it's going onto.

Different solution, anyhow...

webers are generally a less.. ahhh.. simplistic design than SUs. I was having probs with the carb on my bmw 2002 and they're next to impossible to even begin to look at for the home mechainic...

i reckon anyway..

It's probably a Weber 28/36 DCD or similar. Chong, it's nothing like a 38DCOE... read my post above on how it works.

It might be a 32/36 off the 2L escorts. Just go to a wreckers and scout around, shouldn't be that hard to find. You can also make them into mechanical secondaries instead of the vaccum so when u put your foot down you get full throttle. Used to have one on a gemini i had. Did the job quite well and sounded good to boot!

32/36 would be too big on a 998, I reckon- probably OK on a 1275 or bigger.

My Fiat 124 coupe had a 34/34 DHS on it- venturis were 24 and 26, and it had a vac secondary. No torque really under 4000- but I used to spin it to 7500, well past redline..

these come up all the time on uk ebay, some go for 10 pound with manifolds!! They would look awsome sticking out the bonnet
