Post subject:  Lots of Revs
A friend of mine has a 1275 MG Midget that when he starts it, immediately runs up to the redline without his foot anywhere near the accelerator pedal. He's had the twin 1-1/4"SU's apart a number of times searching for anything bent, sticking or binding without finding anything obviously wrong.

Any Ideas????

Hmmm, had that once..... combination of crap carb and clapped out dizzy.....

does it come back down again?

if it doesn't then you've gotta assume the carbs are stuck open - cable stuck, or the linkages jamming

if it does come down again, then check for a (big) manifold leak

Has it only just started doing this ? Has it sat for a long time or just developed this progressively . Do the rev's drop soon after and has he been able to drive it normally if they do , in otherwords does it just spike on starting and then behave ?

It probably has those late throttle butterflies with the little spring loaded valve in them. Maybe one is stuck or bent...?

probly just a sticky throttle cable

could also be a loose carb linkage, then jams a bit on the side

could also be a sticky choke cable not letting the "high Idle Mech" back properly

could be a leaky or cracked manifold

could be a,,,,

will i gon on & on & on & On like i normally do, or should i just shut up ???

Not knowing much about that car, but could the cable be on the wron way around, so when he puts his foot down, the revs drop???? otherwise look at what the others have said, and i will crwal back in a hole somewhere :roll:

Everyone else has had their two bits, so here's mine:

There could be a hole in the Pollution Control Valve diaphragm or maybe in the brake booster.

Do midgets have either of these?

As far as soldering - I tried that on one of those valves. Could NOT get the solder to stick....what am I doing wrong?

Smac, to get it right you need to "Tin" the area first

ask a professional solderer to help you, it`s easy once you know how.

Must heat up the surface you want to solder to and melt the solder with that, not just melt it with the iron and drip it on - that's when you'll get "dry" joints - ie solder not sticking.
