Am fitting clubman seatbelts into my 850, can anyone shed some light where the anchor points are. Photos be nice

I have the belts in the same hole at the bottom of door but now the door will not close.

Can you post some pics of what you're doing ? Are they retractable belts ? How do you mean the door won't shut , is part of the seatbelt blocking it or is there some other problem ?

There was a thread just last week about fitting inertia seat belts into earlier minis.

The bottom line was that you introduce undue stresses on a B piller that was never designed for those loads.

Doc - perhaps you could repeat those phrases you wrote.

In NSW seat belts are supposed to be fitted only by a licensed seat belt fitter so lucky your interstate.

They are retractable belts, I have the wind up piece fitted to the inside of the rear pocket to wards the bottom then up to the top and down to the normal anchor point under the door.

Can one of the engineers on here comment please.
On even a relatively mild impact you run the real risk of ripping the side pocket clean out off and then in addition to the front impact you have a side pocket swishing around in the car.

That is very dangerous and could kill someone.

Now now willy , constructive criticism please .The main problem with what you've done there is there is no reinforcing around the side pocket to stop the retractable bit tearing out and becoming a 1 kg hammer to the back of your's and your passengers heads at 100kph or so if you have an even minor crash . From memory in clubbies there's a lot of reinforcing around the part of the rear bin where the unit is mounted and it's mounted to the floor (I think , anyone help here ?) or the side close to where the panels are welded together . Definitely talk to an engineer on this one and also put the original belts in till you can get some professional advice .

On a clubby its mounted inside the rear pocket but on the specially strengthened "B" pillar and located in an upright position with a locating pin.

The real problem as Doc explained is the inertia reel acts like a "snatch" pulley and markedly increases the mechanical efficiency of the power of the belt.

In an unstrengthened "B" is has the potential to crumple the early model pillar on top of the people in the front seat. In this case thats provided it doesn't simply as previously stated rip out of the rear pocket of rip out the rear pocket.

You were wise to seek our collective opinions even though we give a resounding NO !!!!!!

Has anyone fitted these belts to a 850?

When Kev comes online I guess he'll see this post and hopefully will have some advice for you but seriously , till you can get more info , take the retractables out and refit your old ones in the interest of safety .

Don't get hung up on it being an 850. What it comes down to is fitting retractable belts into a car not designed for them.

Here's the bit that most people don't get: retractable belts are not actually inherently any safer than static belts, if the static belt is adjusted properly. The difference is most people do not take the time to adjust them, so they end up being slack, and THEN they're not as safe. Retractables were introduced because we're basically too lazy to look after our own safety. I'd say for the time/cost/hassle involved stick with the statics, but make sure you and your passengers use them properly. Different sized passengers are usually where people slip up.
