Hi I was just wondering how are the chrome strips attached to the side of a mini (i know total newbie question) ie the ones that run over the wheels and along the sides under the doors? how would you remove and reattach?? is it glue or rivets or what? in the next couple of weeks im going to strip something down for a respray... any good tips for removing glass/rubbers? any special tools? |

I'd like to know the proper way of putting them on aswell. Mine have been rivetted on, and look like crap. They're coming away at the arches, and are broken in places. So I'm thinking about buying new ones and attaching them the correct way. Are the glued on? |

They hold themselves on but usually have one pop rivet at the front. lay them in the hot sun to get plyable and work opposite to the curl, as they come wound up. Five minutes and they are done. I have seen clips along the edge then the strip pushed on over the top. Tom the rubber can be done very quickly aswell yes there is special tools but plenty of people have them to borrow steve |

If you rivett them from underneath and don't penetrate the top of the moulding you can't see the rivett at all and holds on nice and tight without sections pulling off. |

Regardless of how you try to keep them on, eventually (unless it's a trailer queen) the UV and Oz heat will shrink the plastic and they will pull away near the arches... The original Cooper 997 ones were much better, 6pcs of stainless...

Back in '69 when I pulled the 998 Deluxe engine and put in a brand new 997 I also picked up some other bits and pieces including 2 complete sets of those stainless side strips. One day I am going to really have a look at the back of my shed cos I never used them. The Deluxe was barely a year or so old at the time. Yesterday, a chap I met through the UK Ebay came to my place and we ended up fighting our way halfway down the shed. Found a 948 engine I'd forgotten about, 2 brand new quick shifts, 3 sets of Hi Los, an LCB, 2 more steering wheels, a set of Contessa mags, geez, I started to feel like Macca. Oh yes, and a set of the new chrome plastic side strips hanging behind the shed door. Makes me wonder what kinda crap I have lying around in there ??? (Apart from the original Lukey muffler I just sold to a nameless member of this board who would like to know I've since been offered over $200 for the other one !!!) Cheers, smithy |

Eewwwww !!! Comin over what ???? smithy. PS Wan't to see the Mini, mini battery operated figure 8 racetrack I found there this arvo ? If I get a lift to Hay I'll bring it along. It is just made for bar top racing. Found a set of those "cast iron" extractors that Vizard reckons are the bees knees as well. Gots lots of things hanging off them for sensors and stuff. Also unearthed a house door size Mini banner I forgot I had. Hmmmm, I must hang it on a door. Oh yes, the "still in the original unopened BMC box and wrappers" twin carby conversion kit. Found it next to the lightened flywheel from the 1508cc I was putting together. Hell, that must be in the shed as well. Got to get the shovel out. No BS, Cheers, smithy |

The best thing to do with the chrome side moulds is to get a couple of peices of light angle & G clamp them together, then you put the chrome strip onto the angle & leave it in the sun for 2-3 weeks, then its nice & straight and piss easy to fit, no fighting against the roll. Doogie |

I used a heat gun on low temp and worked against the curl. I pop riveted it them it about 20 places on the the underside of the moulding. It took 2days to do but you cant see the rivets and looks really good. But would hate to ever have to do it again. Having flares dosnt help either!!!! |
