From memory someone told me it was related to a head gasket problem. As in the head gasket is going.

It also happens to Granny all the time and hence why I carry a bottle of water around with me now...

But perhaps someone else might be able to explain this in more detail...

It is `normal' to lose approx 1/2 the top tank out the overflow with a 1275 particularly. People have whinged about this ever since the 1275S came out.
Water expands when heated, if you fill it to the brim it has to go somewhere.
Later Clubby radiators had a `level' mark inside, below the neck. It's about 1/2 way up, funny that.:)

Bear in mind at operating temp the rad is actually full, each time you warm it up it just expels the air out of the tank as the water expands. 8)

If you are paranoid about it, fit a Moke overflow header tank setup. Or a plastic tank off a Jap car and a recovery type cap.

i have fitted an oveflow tank to my van and it is working a treat :D

Mine is out of a morris 1100s. Once you have your overflow tank get some 1/4 inch tubing from the hardware store you connect the tubing to the radiator where the oveflow tube would normally be then connect this to the overflow tank. Make sure you have a spring cap on the overflow tank and just a rubber seal cap on the radiator.

Then fill up the radiator and the overflow tank. when the water expands in the radiator it is forced into the overflow tank where it condenses and runs back into the radiator.

Very simple yet effective.

or you can just get a coke bottle and some 1/4 inch tubing and just have the overflow going into the bottle. You have to empty this back into the radiator fairly regularly though

cheers
