Post subject:  What to do while engine is out?

I think I've got the correct forum.

Anyway got my engine out ready to pull the gearbox off and take it to be fixed.
While it's out is there anything I should be doing that is impossible to do while engine is in the car. (apart from a complete rebuild) I'm gonna replace that little hose between the head and water pump coz it looks like it could be a right pain in the ass to do later.
I want to repaint the engine block, it's blue at the moment but there are parts that are a light frosty green, does anyone know what colour was original

I'm tidying up the engine bay too while it's empty. :)

piston rings, and hone the cylinders
fit new bearings to big and little end,
ARP rod bolts,
new oil pump,
double row timing set
unleaded head conversion?
clutch and pressure plate
these are a few cheap things to do without major $ involved.

I'd say give it a freshen up with rings and bearings unless it's less than 10,000 k's old , might as well do it now and extend the life of the motor while it's out and while you're waiting for the gearbox . Also a good time to fit a different cam if you were thinking of doing it as although it's possible to change one in-situ it can be a pain in the rear and is just sos much easier to do when the motor's sitting on the bench . Also freshen up the paint in the engine bay and maybe get a new speedo cable if it's the original , they can be dificult to fit in-situ as well .

I'm in the process of cleaning up the engine bay, I might have a go at spraying the firewall coz there's a fair bit of paint missing.
I couldn't believe once I'd removed the grease and road grime off the subframe it was shiny black paint!
Steering rack has already been fixed.
Uni's been replaced, CV's and hubs are good.

might just be an idea to inspect the head and its components before you go replacing things - if things are shot then replace by all means

From memory the gasket kit for doing the gearbox comes with a head gasket anyway so you might as well pull the head off and see what the rest is like . If there is a bit of wear then a freshen up mightn't hurt , at the least give the head a clean and de-carbon and all it's cost you is one less head gasket for the spares box .

tim , i did read . A major rebuild is decking the block, tunnel bore , close and hone the rods, x ray the crank and nitride it, center starp the bottom end, port the heads fit s/steel valves, ect
changing the rings and bearings is a 2 min job and saves u having to do it for a long time, The tips i gave are just basic ( kero overhaul) tips that are cheap but worth their weight in gold. Dont do anything just wave a spray can over it , I dont give a rats a$$ as it not me having to strip it down in 40 K to replace the rings.
most common engine failure
1, piston rings worn
2, timing chain stretch
3, oil pump
4, water pump
5, valve wear
6 stretched rod bolts
i wont put in gasket fail as all minis like to have a small drip somewhere at some time.

Yes!
Please please please paint it while the motor is out.
Its not worth letting your engine bay down when you have the engine out and not painting it.
Even if the paint is shabby in the engine bay, it will draw more attention to your nicely painted, shiny motor! :D

A very nice match (not exactly "close") is available in pressure pack.
It is by White Knight and the colour is Alpine Green.
