There have been various topics on this so do a search.

A couple of the people on here have imported minis and some actually have a business doing it but by all accounts it is not an easy process and you really need to find someone with experience with dealing with the authorities.

Also the general jist was Japan is a better source of mini imports than the UK but do a search and you shall find

You can't import anything built after '88.
UK minis are all rust buckets, even the good ones. This is because of the salty wet conditions in the winter.
The transport fees will be more than the car.
It's just not woth it.

I thought so. Probably better off just sourcing one locally.

The car price is $300.
To your door will be $5000 and 3 months minimum.
Then you will need to replace every panel on the car because the rust is so bad.
Believe me, a $300 running car in britan is an absolute crap heap.

then the 1000 to 2000 to import it just blows the import out of the water

Damn. By the time it's out here and delivery costs have been taken into consideration, still have to restore it. Better off buying one that's already restored or one that doesn't need "much" work.

well as someone who imports classic english sports cars for a living its not that hard to import a car as long as its pre 89, you apply for import approval $50 then arange shipping $2000 if its drivable or about $2500 for a share container, pre 72 there is no duty just GST and probably fee's for cleaning (rip off for Patricks) after they inspect for AQIS. Not that hard really

What so less than 3000 dollars?

Not so bad.

I don't know if I trust pommy salesman though...."oh yeah mate, there's no rust, and the engine's a pearler!" or "I'd keep it myself except if it wasn't for my very sick muvver"
