Hard to tell really, lots of things make a clunking noise when they are broken..

Is it a rodchange? ie. lift to get reverse?...Iwould be looking at the engine steady bars..

When I used to drive forward I got a clunking noise.

Turned out to be my torque wrench on the floor in the back baning on the rear panel.

Then theres the time my uni joint U joints un-bolted themselves and the uni joint fell apart at 60k an hour...that kinda made a clunking noise for 15k or so until the car wouldnt go up anymore hills.

Is it just one single clunk, or does it just continue to clunk while you put ure foot down ?

Check the rubbers in the engine steadies , grab the engine by the rocker cover and see if you can shake it forwards to backwards as well . Shouldn't be any movement but if the rubbers are shot it could be moving and clunking with the torque .

yeah it moves a tad my right hand side engine steady mount closest to the window is broken... but i didnt think it was that... ill weld it up 2moro and see i guess...

Should be that , just check the type of stay , some were cast and horrid but others were steel and can be welded . If you can't weld it , make sure you get a replacement the same size as there were different lengths available for different positions .

I had an incident with a clunk today.
I had a clunk for a few seconds and pulled over, thinking I had picked up a nail or something. Nothing..
So I kept on driving and TWACK..... I look behind me only to see rubber tumbling down the road... I think shite... was that the rubber behind the gear shift?

Nup...wrong... as it turns out... twas my ribber uni joint exploding. All i could find when i got home was a screwed u-bolt (see below). Not to worry, at least its not to hard of a fix. I'm kicking myself that I didn't replace it when I replaced the other side...

its probably one of these things:

your exhaust hitting the body

your gear selector housing hitting the body

a badly worn differential

i doubt its my exhaust thats fairly new... and the cotton reels for the gear selector i replced a week or 2 ago

I'd put money on it that it's that engine steady bar.
