Post subject:  Brake troubles or not

I disconnected the brake booster from the vacum on the manifold when puting a new carb in and tried to drive without it for a few days just to see the comparison (vacum on booster and manifold sealed offcourse).

Well I never had any problems locking the wheels if I wanted to with the booster but without it and no other changes made to the braking system the braking power went out the window and the general feeling was that of some air in the system (you know you pump the pedal a few times and only get the feeling back). At the same time the brakes seemed to burn a little (they'd be hot and stink a fair bit after normal driving but when on stands the wheels still spun fairly freely (3-4 turns when spun with the hand).

I blead the brakes but it didnt seem to help nearly as much as connecting the booster to the manifold again. Now she brakes fine but the front discs still stink. Any ideas?

What pads are you running? Some do stink when you get them hot. Maybe they're glazed up now.
Go get some Greenstuffs...
I agree, it's hard to lock the wheels using S discs without a servo. But I like the hard pedal feel it has, and I got no room for a servo anyhow unless I stick it in the car.

Well thats the funny part, the servo isnt supposed to make her stop better just easier, but in my case there's no hard pedal feel without it at all. I'm a pretty big guy and have no trouble bringing it all the way down without the servo but there's no feeling there. But hey presto put the servo on and you get the feeling back in the pedal - doesnt make sense does it?

How much are greenstuffs?

well thats because the booster is there you still have to make the booster work internally to get the barakes to work if you know what i mean take the booster out of the circut and it will feel different again

If you really want to try without a servo, just get a stock Mini brake MC pipe and slip that in.
EBC Greenstuffs (Cooper S)- p/no DP2101 were $93 a set, but last time I looked they were $116.60 + delivery...

I bought 'em here last time-

Check brake shops too.

Heh, buy 2 sets...

<edit> I bought one set, + a set of DP101 (Street Kevlars, aka Blackstuff)- haven't tried them yet. Better traffic pad I'm told... more bite when cold.

are the green stuff pads a "track day" type pad?

Post subject:

Yeah. Street Kevlars would probably be better on the road, but I haven't worn the Greenstuffs out to try them yet!
DP101 are a lot cheaper too.

Uh-huh, I see where you're coming from.

Mintex used to do comp ones in UK, dunno if still available. Karcraft don't list them anymore.
