Post subject:  heritage certificates
is there a way to get one for aussie built cars? is there any way to find out build dates and details about a mini. i bought a real nice little 850 from an old lady. the car is amazingly original but even though she was the first owner of the car she had lost the books and could not remember where she bought the car exactly, she seems a little short on memory. i would love to get some info on this little car....is there any one who has tried to do a similar thing?

Yeah , helpful Cush , but not quite what marcello is after . I'm not sure about Australian mini's , I don't think the Heritage mob in England has the details on the Aussie built ones , maybe lucky if it was a very very early pommy import one but doubtful . What's the body number of your's ? All I can offer is to compare it with mine which hass it's books from new and if it's close it will give a rougher idea of when it was sold (well , maybe to within a few months if there's only a hundred or so difference in the numbers ) No dealer stickers or anything on it ? WHich state/city was the owner in when she bought it ?

No Cush , saying they had the record keeping skills of the BBC is being too kind to them , they had the record keeping skills of a dementia suffering illiterate baboon . I've found a fair few dead ends trying to locate details , some claim all the records were taken back to BLMC when they folded here and then destroyed , others say destroyed here . Maybe a matter of finding who has the records for individual dealers .

How much of your cars history do you have Cush ? Maybe we should start a register of 850 body numbers , where they were sold , when they were sold and see what we can work out from there .

Sold 15/02/63
Dealer P and R Williams , Woollahra

Most other things on the car (wiper motor , regulatop box , windows all point to late 62 build (most things 7th or 9th month 62 , couple of months from being made to being fitted at that stage ?) .

When I visited the British Motor Heritage in Gaydon they didn't know that the Morris 1100 had been built in Australia so they probably don't know about the Australian Mini. :roll:

I tried to register myself (or at least my laboratory medicine qualifications) to work in Britain a while back

They didn't know that we had differenent qualifications and exams to them - Argh !!! the wanted a full curiculum detail so they could assess the standard of qualification

So why does it suprise me that they dont know about Morris 1100's in oz

Especially when they only have a Vauxhall Monaro

yeah Marcello, you are all outa luck on this one mate. British Motor Heritage have all the old BMC (and probably other) build records so what they offer is a service that searches through the records to find evidence that your car was built, and whatit actually was.

Since Leyland had a scorched earth policy when they were leaving Zetland and then Enmore as well, they just dumped/burned/shredded the lot. Remember the company was worth jack all and the cars they made even less at the time, so they had no ide at all that someone may actually keep an old mini for 40 years, let alone care enough to keep records for when you bought it off that person. :cry:

As to what the poms know about qualificatiosn Mike, i took my degree in aerospace engineering and a couple years experience with me, and they tried to offer me job on an assembly line putting buckles on seatbelts :roll:

thanks guys for some help. looking at my car i can see on the plate that car number is 41962, the number on the radiator shroud is 42074. when i picked up the car i realised that it was registered as a 1964 car but i am sure that this car was built in '63 as every little part that has a build date on it says '63 and the months are all dated as end of '63. the engine number is 8y/u/h 1439. colour is 'slate grey'. my car has the fully rounded front lower corners beneath the bumper. i was told that this changed to cut away corners in '64. please correct me if im wrong. i met a guy who had '63 850 that was registered as a 64 like mine. his body number was a couple after mine but had the corners of the lower apron removed as per a 64 car. no panels had been changed on his car ever. does this help? it would be a great idea to put together a register as mentioned by sports 850. what would be the best way do do this. i think that this would be a great service to many people. i can never seem to get much help in regards to original details and info for restoring minis to 'as new' condition. this forum should have a whole section dedicated to such restorations. might even stop some people from ruining a perfectly original mini !

You'll find most mini are registered 4-6 months after production, your car was built 63 then sat in the yard at BMC then got transported to the dealer then sat on the showroom floor till sold.

If you want any info on originality for 850s I have two very original

I have read in a couple of places that the cut away corners were phased in progresively in '66 :?

Your car would have been completed some months after the individual electrical components were made, and was probably sold as '64.

~September 64 was when they brought the cutouts in, it was to improve brake cooling, supposedly.
Funny how later on, the Clubby came out with none then!:lol:

My old 64 850 was one of the last made without them.

wow! crap steve those are both 2 very nice minis. u should be proud! is there any chance that you could send me more photos of your cars i would really love to see them. i am really keen on restoring my 850 to factory original condition. i have got a good car to start from. every thing is there and it just ticked over 40k on the clock when i was driving it off the trailer and into my garage. what year are yours? mine still has its original interior but the front seats are not original vinyl. do you know any one or any way to get the correct vinyl. its red with fine black horizontal lines in it do you know where i can get some of those switches with the clear arms for my dash. mine has them but they are so perished. one last question, my dash panel is a grey sort of colour. i thought it should be white like yours but do you know of any other 63 850's that have this grey dash panel? it is white on the back though, strange. thanks for your help. i hope i can help you some time too, just let me know.
