Post subject:  Mini pro chooses 202 over 295

Gday everyone.

Well engine rebuild has been booked..give me a month or so..fingers crossed and it should be done.

going to be an 1100..but heres the thing. My mechanic doesnt want to use my 295 head. he wants to use a 202...i trust him. :?

He says the 295 would only be good if i was doing track racing or something..theres too much flow for on the road, so thus lack of low down torque? but dont quote me. i wasnt sure what he was talking bout..haha

anyway.. whats your opinion of this?

later

Did he offer you a straight swap for the 295?
Judging from other topics in regards to these heads the 202 can be ported to flow as well as the 295 so all is not lost.

Problem with a 295 for road use is the chambers are HUGE (28.4cc)- they were used on motors with flat pistons (1098 Sprite) or D-top domed pistons (998 Cooper) which both had ~9:1 C/R.
If you put them on a 998 or 1100 with the usual dished pistons, the C/R is way too low unless you rip .080-.100" off it. Even then it's a bit low for performance use.

Better in this case IMO to start with a 202 head, do the ports, then open the chambers up, but not as big as the 295.

202s make great race heads too- ask GR and others.

Yeah well,,,the 295 is far superior than the 202 in std form,,,the 202 will need vast amounts of work to even come close to the quallity of the 295

& there`s definately no loss of power if you fit a 295, only gains to be had right across the rev range,,,the 295 is no "RACE" head, it`s just simply a far better casting with much better air flow from low air speed right through to hi air speed... Coopers, sprites & some Automatics ran them from the factory, I`ve never heard anyone with mini engine experience say what you`ve just said your mechanic say. Please talk with some of the "EXPERIENCED" mini engine builders around. (That is to say , talk to someone who has worked on minis professionally for more than just a few years)

& Please don`t swap him your 295 for a 202 for god`s sake!!!!!!!!!!!!! The 295 is worth real money & the 202,,,well,,,lets just say that every man & his dog has a 202,,,dam i have about 40 of them sitting here, how many do you want???

ask him if he even knows what a 206 casting is, see what he says about them.

Dam i hate seeing people get ripped !!!!!

202 better than a 295 --->absolute bollocks!!!!!!!!!!!

Matt, talk to Graham Russell. Many race motors are running them now, mind you- they are heavily modified.
KC agrees too.

Oh yeah, i don`t dispute that Doc,,,I reckon you allready know that...

BUT!!! "IF" & that`s important here , the big "IF" it`s a stock 295, & lets just say a skim , an O`haul & she`ll be sweet, bolt her on ---> the 295 would be prefect for a little road mini right??? Good things & no loss of power down low at all.

But to get a 202 to perform as well as the 295 would take some serious work (as we all know & you have suggested)---> time = money spent --->&/or last as long (for the sake of possible cracks in the 202) The 295 is very thick casting , much the same as a 206 in that respect,

I wouldn`t be saying much till i see the 2 heads in person , but still, the difference here is chunks of time & money to fit the worked 202 (which it sounds very much like he`s not going to do, sounds more like he`s just going to throw a std-ish 202 on, simple as that , i may be wrong & i`m probly being bold here by saying that, But, i do know what goes on & i`m pretty sure you know what i`m talking about here Doc,,,think about the deal they`re taking about, maybe we`d need some more solid info on the deal at hand, i`d be very very suspicious ,

& as you know Doc, i trust Graham (how coulod anyone not trust Graham? :-) ),,,,& both you & i think alike,,,,, But i also know what happens in the """USUAL""" Mini game here in Brisbane... You know what i mean ???

I would suspect that the customer allready wonders if it`s right too,,,otherwise why have they asked the question??????? HHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmm----do you really trust him?????????

I wonder :-)

But then, your 295 might be fully worked & as big motha huge as our full race 206 (which i doubt- ask Freddy Sayers) if so then it`s probly not the go for your road motor & the std -ish 202 would be a better bet

ok ok,,, end of dribble session :-)

heya.
im not swapping the 295 for anything...i might use it late should i chose to supercharge or something..should bring down the C/R

I wanted to use the head..but he suggested it would be too hard to find flat top pistons or an 1100 rebore....its not is it???

if i used standard pistons...he said i would be ripping into cooling parth ways just to bring up the C/R

the 202 wont be getting any metal taken out of the chambers...a possible chance for a port and polish...

tell me...if i could get flat top pistons for him, would it be better to use the 295 ???

cheers
K

imo go the 202 with dished pistons, then you have the option of adding the 295 later on and boosting it. then you wont have to rebuild your motor to
suit boost ( as long as you arent running 15 psi......)

So my 295 with unleaded seats and bigger exhaust valves, new springs a
guides should be OK on the 1100 - Sweeeet 8)

Benjamin has acquired a 295 head, it's stock. I just did the sums to calc the C/R it would have on his 1132.
With 7cc dished pistons, .052" deck height (yes, that's what his is), ACL gasket, it works out be to a whole 7.44:1. Bloody low, ain't it...
I think he's now going to port the 202 out instead... 8)
