Just wondering what causes the bluish colour smoke from the exhaust.

as i am leaning towards problems which i don't really want to fix.

Normally wear somewhere in the engine , maybe rings worn , or if you coast along with your foot off and then accelerate to a big blue puff it could be valve seals in the head . Does it run well apart from the smoke ?

Yeah it only happens when i coast along the road or going down a hill, then when i push for the gas to go back up the hill or more speed, that is when the blue smoke comes out.

But apart from that the car runs fine.

Looks like the valve stem seals are worn

If you are wanting to fix, start with the head and get that reco'd. You gotta rebuild the head anyways when ya rebuild the motor (generally), so you aren't losing anything if that doesn't fix the problem.

same thing happened to mine ,valve stem seals ,its not a big job but totally agree do the head up first ,thats all i done & mines been going great ,plus when you take the head off to get recond you can see what state your bores & pistons are in.

they usually come in the head gasket kit so you may as well take the head off and check the rest of the head components for wear

blue smoke: oil burning
black smoke: fuel burning
white smoke: water vapour

blue is obviously the least desired

The way I interpret that is you only get the smoke when accelerating up a hill or alternatively when the motor is under load.....not when coasting along the road.

If that is correct, it's WORN RINGS...... :(

I new set of pistons WITH rings for an 1100 will be about $160 - $180 + $100 - $150 for a rebore.

OR....just buy another running motor.

Adam I am about to drop a good 998 into JAM so that I can take out my 1100 and tweak it some more. If you are interested I will sell you the good 998 when I am finished with it. Cheaper than rebuilding your motor.

Anton, how much you looking at selling your 998 for??[/quote]

If it only happens after you have gone down a hill or trailing throttle its actually valve stem seals or guides, if it is rings it will blow smoke when you rev the motor and get worse as the revs rise, I bet it blows smoke when you first start it to

That's not how I interpreted it :? "apart from that the car runs fine" suggests that it quite possibly is not worn rings a compression or leak down test may be able to tell you more...

The reason you get a puff of smoke when you accelerate (for those that don't know) is the engine is doing little work (not under load) so oil builds up in the cylinders and isn't being burnt off as soon as you hit the accelerator a whole heap of accumulated oil gets burn off and you get a puff of smoke.

But AFAIK worn rings aren't the only way for oil to get into the combustion chambers as suggested worn valve stem oil seals could be the culprut and as these will be cheaper and easier to check I would look here first. Doc suggested the the viton ones available from the austinamerica website (according to this site the original valve stems seals weren't all that reliable).

added to this the fact that otherwise there is not a problem power wise this sounds like the case that stem seals are to blame

Is it using excessive amounts of oil :?: How long was the hill you were coasting down if it was a long hill then the oil may have accumulated over a longer time and you might be worrying about a small more normal amount of oil getting into the cylinders.

If I am wrong with any of the above sorry and correct me but I would be hesitant at saying you need a rebuild.

Yeah, unfortuatly it does smoke a bit at start up. man this is sounding more and more worse.

thanks heaps for your advice their Fuzzy.

i will get the compression tested and run it by my mechanic and see what he says, and hoping it wont cost too much too fix.
