my 2 front wheels have heaps of toe in i think and are wearing the outsides of tires so for a quick fix just so i dont ruin a set of tires i swapped them over

but the passenger side wheel can move in a strange direction
say you had the wheel jacked up and you grabed the wheel one hand at the top and one at the bottom and pushed your top arm towards the car and pulled the bottom towards you it moves a fair bit reallly

what to do is this a wheel bearing or should i check some thing else

On my camry at least this was a result of the nut at the end of the CV joint / drive not being done up tight enough so I'd check that.

Also check the top and bottom ball joints (particularly the top as it has the weight)

could also be a worn axle through the top arm I guess although I think that would be less likely.

Try to isolate where the movement is coming from and go from there.
Quite probably wheel bearings though


If you just swapped them side for side without taking them off the rims isn't the worn part still going to be on the outside of the tyre

If its only moving top to bottom and not side to side it isn't a wheel bearing, check the ball joints and the innner bushes

yeah i moved rear to front so not to wear them completly till i fix

ill have to have a look tommorow so basically take wheel off, take drum off, take pin out, undo that bolt or check if loose first, then move bearing around see if any movement of none then start shaking things under there

I would check the ball joints first as these tend to wear long before the wheel bearings start to go. You would be surprised how different a car handles with properly shimmed and tight ball joints.

If it's lots of toe in you will get wear on the tyres on the inside of the thread (side closest to the engine). If this is the case, it's simply a matter of steering alignment by adjusting the steering tie rod ends. It's not hard to do but hard to do right... there should be 1/16th toe out on the front, anything other than this will wear the tyres really quick ( i know first hand!!! )

well took it to matt today and now its all good
bearing had to be tightend and wheels aligned theres a little play still but he considered that when aligning
