Flywheel puller finally came in the mail and I now have the gear box seperate to engine block and all the nuts and bolts it containers marked where they belong :D

It's going to be a week or more before I can get it to a specialist so I was wondering, should I visually be able to see any problems?

One thing I noticed is the idler gear bearing seems to have a lot of movement.

Not yet, if the gearbox doesn't need a full rebuild I'll be able to afford to do what you suggested.

even if u just do rings and bearings and possible the timing set, ur doing the engine justice. u will have to check what sizes u have first b4 ordering parts, eg crank pin size

Just concentrating on the gearbox for the moment, should I be able to see ant wear on the gears. The idler gear seems to have movement in the bearing but when the outer casing is put back on, which supports the other side of the bearing, there seems to be no movement. I showed a fellow Ausmini'r (who is a mechanic) and he thought there was lots of back lash in the diff. Is there anything else I should be looking for?

Wear on the layshaft, and wear on the mainshaft's nose (needle bearing). I always replace these bearings, they cost peanuts.
If layshaft is worn, be careful what you buy- some well known ones are so soft you can file them (so useless to run needle rollers on).
PM sent.

Quote:
Dodge,
piston rings, and hone the cylinders
fit new bearings to big and little end,
ARP rod bolts,
new oil pump,
double row timing set
unleaded head conversion?
clutch and pressure plate
these are a few cheap things to do without major $ involved.

So what will this cost me and what special tools if any are required?[/b]
