The previous owner of my Mini has brush painted  (I presume house type paint) the whole car. In places it is starting to peel and I would like to get the whole lot off.

I know there may be bog etc hiding in places but I can manage that and make a better job with an aerosol can on any patches that need it and I am going to do a bare metal respray next summer. In the meantime I would like to be able to polish the car and make it look a little better.

Does anyone have any ideas how to get this layer off of the "nomal" paint underneath.

Cheers

Rick

Pressure washer. :D
Took the paint straight off my hubcaps when I last washed my daily driver.

I would be either biding your time until you do the full bare metal respray or doing the bare metal respray now not just because I haven't a clue how to remove only the outside layer of paint but for the work that is involved you may as well take it back to bare metal.

hmmmmm ... yes it's really going to depend on how thick it's been applied. I know with mine before I decided to do the full metal paint strip, I did try to take just the house paint off .... it came off ok on the sides of the car but it was pretty thick on the roof and other areas and was almost impossible to move.

I started on the sides using a scraper and this was the result:

I could have kept going but got pretty sick of it! Also I tried rubbing other areas with turps which worked but was very slow going.

The other suggestion here (pressure washer) by Harley sounds like it would work ..... my painter suggested this to me but I never actually tried it as I couldn't get my hands on one .... by then I'd decided to strip it entirely anyway. Preferably try to do this with hot water .... I reckon that would work better.

My final bit of advice would be leave the house paint on the car until you start stripping it. I reckon the house paint actually helped lift the original paint off the car using the Cling wrap method.

Cheers,
BC.
