I would assume you mean using an original jack - the reason you open the door is otherwise the jack scratches all the paint off! At least I think that is the reason, looking at the design of the original jack. Heard of a poor bloke doing it to his recently restored MGB

Also the jack should be set with the foot in a bit, so it swings to nearly vertical when wound right up.

god damn, dont waste your time - go out and buy a REAL jack and throw that piece of crap jack in the bin!!! I'm trying to work out how to make a Formula One style jack for my cars.... no pumping OR winding, just push down on the handle ONCE.... |

I'm trying to work out how to make a Formula One style jack for my cars.... no pumping OR winding, just push down on the handle ONCE.... If you just got a flat out in the boondocks and need to fit the spare, at least the stock jack will go in there and lift it up off the deck, regardless of how low the car is. For home use though, any jack will beat it.

Yeah trolley jacks and fancy $1000 jacks don't mean crap if it can't fit under the car! my front was low befre, but now it is so low I can't fit anything under there. I need to jack it up from the front steady rod thingy with a normal jack first before being able to put the trolley jack under. I don't fancy carrying the 10kg trolley jack around everywhere so any jack will do in case of a flat, even a crappy 36yr old one

68Delux - I always have that problem with my hydro. But remember, it's a hydro! If you lift the car up yourself first, it doesn't settle as low to the ground and you can fit the jack under. When I do an oil change, I jack the front of the car up then let it down, only then will my oil tray fit under the sump! |

Mini vans have a kind of scissor type jack from the factory. The hole for a sedan post-type jack (in the sills) is blocked off on a van. Incidentally the Mini van jack is the SAME as a Jag E-TYPE! Classy! 
Go to the wreckers and get a cheap scissor jack from any old car. Weld a plate on the top to spread the load a bit if needed. But only use it on the subframes, never on the floor! Most scissor jacks will wind down to 2" flat. If you Mini is too low to fit one of these under it, you have problems....
