Post subject:  New seat belts for a clubbie
Hi. I am looking at getting this clubbie of mine fixed up and running after many years out of action. I am wanting to get new seatbelts as the originals are stuffed as you'd expect. I want retractables for the front.
Is it better to get some remanufactured clubbie ones? (I don't actually know if these exist).
Or go for some new fangled aparatus that needs engineering to fit properly.
I'm assuming heaps of people would have experience with this.
Anyone wanna share some wisdom? :wink:

It depends on how you feel about using secondhand seat belts :o If your OK with it I won't stop you (unknown history could have been in a crash). If your clubby previously had retractables your OK but if it had non retractable seatbelts you can run into clearance issues if you put your seat back far enough :( If you put them in the bins like the later clubby's did then you will need the appropraite strengthening etc I expect. (engineering time)

There was also something about the upper mount to the seat belts no being strong enough to handle the retractable seat belts (I think this was an issue with roundies though :? )

Retractables should be OK in any Clubby, the top mounts were strengthened around when the MK2 S and Mini-K came out.
Problem is, with early Clubbies- (as I found out) the tilt mechanism of the Clubby seat fouls the seatbelt reel and severely restricts seat rearward travel.
I had `em in Barney for 1 week, then took back out. :x
Now have new static belts in there... :cry:

I was wondering do the tilt mechanisms foul on the tunnel or handbrake if you swap the front passenger and drivers seats :?: :idea: might make it possible but a PITA for rear passengers to get out (legal issues here ?), but who has rear passengers anyway :D

I tried swapping them but didn't work, can't remember why. I think prob is seat is just too wide- it's not only the lever that's the problem.
No worries with putting tilt latches between seats though, My 69 Fiat was like that stock. :wink:

It is a 76 clubbie and I think it had retractables originally. They sit inside the back parcel hole I think.

The back seatbelts have a strange setup where they have a lap/sash setup but from the middle out. Also both seatbelts go through a plastic handle/hole thing ontop of the back seats. Very strange and I'd think unsafe. the plastic handle thing is already broken in this case.

Anyone know how to make this work with todays safety standards?

The plastic bit can't be a safety thing it's just there to hold the belts in a convenient position IMO.

If you originally had retractable seatbelts there is no problem you will have the reinforced mounts and stuff grab some secondhand clubby belts or new belts if they will fit and your away. Best to check that new belts meet the Australian standard or whatever I think I remeber a previous thread mentioning belts that were cheap replacements that don't comply with the Aust standards. :wink:

Yes, you can put retractable belts in, that shouldn't be a problem at all. My workplace deals alot in seatbelt replacement if you'd like to PM me.

That plastic thing in the rear is there so the 'belts are above your shoulder height, a mandatory requirement of any seatbelt. It also keeps the belt at the right angle, too. It doesn't need to be strong, It just looks a little flimsy.

<EDIT> You can't legally buy 2nd hand belts, nor can they be re-webbed.

Yes a 76 would have had retractables originally.
On these later cars there is still a lower mount forward of the B pillar (used on the older Minis) not used in this case.
Leyland just welded an extra captive nut to the existing inner sill to line up with the rear pocket.:)

I went to buy a set of setbelts for a Morris 1100 from the usual suppliers (Auto one, Repco, super cheap) and i was told that none of them are allowed to sell seatbelts (this is NSW) and that all belts must be purchased through licenced seat belt fitters who then fit them.

Sad isnt it

I fopund that seat belts out of a Mazda 626 (rwd) are the same as clubbie retractables.

Yeah next they will make it illegal to work on your own cars... :x
You'll have to go to your dealer who will then get his 1st year apprentice to do it (wrongly).

re the seatbelts- Apparently it's illegal to sell s/h ones, but not to give them away.
I have heard of some wreckers just letting you take them. :wink:

The fact is that you can use any seatbelt out of any car - But nobody said it was a good idea. The only thing that makes them different is the angle at which the retractor mechanism sits on. The wrong angle and the belt won't work. Ever noticed that when parked on a steep hill?

We here in SA can sell a seatbelt to anyone, who can go home and fit the item themselves - You'd swear some people wouldn't know what end of the spanner to hold. But they can, quite legally, install it on their own.

Super cheap here in coffs sells them and they are a good brand (just can't remember name) and im pretty sure repco does aswell

The last 2 sets I got (Klippan K1215 I think) came from Robbo's Spares, they got them in.
Was a couple of years ago though.
